Volleyball: Gophers Post Two League Wins Including Topping Cotter/HL

Chatfield volleyball, ranked #2 in Class AA, posted a pair of TRC wins on the week. The first was a rematch of last year’s 1AA title game. At Cotter/Hope Lutheran, the Gophers were played tight in two sets, but still got a sweep (25-23, 25-16, 25-21). Kristi Rindels’ group also swept last year’s section title match. Senior Trindy Barkeim (15 kills, 14 digs, 14-15 serving, 5 aces) had a big match to lead the way. She hit .464 while the team hitting percentage was .170. Harper Goldsmith (3 kills, 28 assists, 7 digs) and Cora Bicknese (9 kills, 10 digs) also did big work. Hannah Tweten (10 digs) and Amaya Harmening (6 kills) added ancillary help. Chatfield then swept PEM 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15). Bicknese (15 kills, 7 digs) led the offensive attack with Goldsmith (4 kills, 29 assists, 5 digs). Barkeim (7 kills, 7 digs), Tweten (8 digs, 7-8 serving, 4 aces), Harmening (7 kills), and Zaylee Boyum (6 digs) helped. Seven girls enabled Chatfield to tally 14 aces. The Gophers are 2-0 in the TRC, 2-1 overall.

Volleyball: #3 Falcons Win Two Including Getting Coach Malley to 200 Wins

Fillmore Central volleyball, ranked #3 in Class A, posted two TRC wins by sweep. The first, a victory over St. Charles (25-6, 25-21, 25-8), notably got Coach Travis Malley his 200th career win. Sophomore middle hitter Madi Zwart (18 kills on .577 hitting, 3 aces, 6 total blocks) and senior setter Aubrey Daniels (19 assists, 23-25 serving, 6 aces) had big matches. Lauren Dahly (10 kills), Hannah Vaalemoen (13 assists), Kyla Hellickson (5 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces), Josie Corson (6 digs), and Norah Nagel (6 digs) also nicely contributed to the cause. La Crescent/Hokah (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) was a bit more of challenge. Zwart (19 kills, 4 total blocks), Daniels (3 kills, 18 assists, 23-23 serving, 5 aces), and Hellickson (6 kills, 15 digs, 12-13 serving, 4 aces) had big matches. Vaalemoen (17 assists), Nagel (4 kills, 8 digs, 5 aces), and Dahly (6 kills) helped. With three girls getting at least four, FC had 16 aces. The Falcons improved to 2-0 in the TRC, 3-0 overall. Coach Malley has headed FC since 2014. With 200 wins in 11-plus complete seasons (including the COVID shortened campaign), his squads have averaged about 18 victories per with a trio of 1A finals appearances including last year’s state berth. Malley was also an assistant coach when FC was state runner-up in 2013. The Falcons have posted a winning season all 11 years and only once failed to make Rochester and at least the section quarterfinals (no playoff COVID season not counted).
