Funeral Mass for Viola M. Gartner will be held at 11 a.m. November 11, 2023, at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston, Minn., with Father Edward McRath officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the MN State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
Viola Gartner, age 94, of Preston, Minn., died Saturday, November 04, 2023, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minn.
Viola Margaret Kellner was born June 01, 1929, in Wesley, Iowa, to Mathias and Mary (Foertsch) Kellner. She lived and attended school in the Wesley area until 1948 when her family moved to the Stewartville, Minn., area. She was united in marriage to James F. Gartner on August 29, 1964, at St Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester. Together they farmed in the Preston area until 1996. Over the years Viola worked for Woolworth in Rochester, she worked for a maid service and at St. Marys Hospital, the Preston nursing home, Preston Fountain High School for 26 years and for Park Lane Estates for 11 years, retiring when she was well into her 80s. Viola enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, crocheting, knitting, sewing, cooking and gardening. She also loved spending time at the family’s camp ground meeting the campers each season.
She is survived by her children Tom (Micki) Gartner of Preston, Minn., and Linda (Doug Johnson) Gartner of Mason, Wis.; four grandchildren: Brady Gartner, Daulton Gartner, Bailey (Cole) Schwichtenberg and Jonathan (Lora Shoup) Hanson; a great-granddaughter, Paisley Schwichtenberg and two brothers, Sylvester Kellner of Rochester and Paul (Carol) Kellner of Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on May 2, 2014; four brothers: Lawrence, Mathias Joseph, Kenneth and Louis and three sisters: Mary Ann, Fidelis “Lilly” and Margaret.
