As of press time on Thursday, November 5, 2020, American voters still don’t know who has claimed the title of President of the United State of America for this upcoming term. And, there is a chance voters may not find clarity for quite some time. Due to absentee and mail ballot processing, the states of Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia remain questionable.
In the general election, President Donald J. Trump and his running mate V.P. Michael R. Pence captured 1,479,36 (45.38%) of Minnesota’s votes, while DFL candidate Joseph R. Biden and V.P. running mate Kamala Harris walked away with 1,711,752 (52.40%) of the votes in Minnesota. Celebrity Kanye West was on the Minnesota’s ballot as an independent, pulling 7,918 from Minnesota voters. Write-in votes totaled 9,962.
U.S. Senator
DFL incumbent Tina Smith won the district with 1,561,848 (48.75%) votes, beating Republican Jason Lewis who garnered 1,393,730 (43.50%) of the votes.
U.S. Representative District 1
Republication Jim Hagedorn will be continuing his work as a congressman. For the second time, he beat DFL-endorsed Dan Feehan. It was a close race with Hagedorn capturing 178,049 (48.55%) of the votes, with Feehan trailing behind with 167,131 (45.57%) votes.
District 28 – State Senate
Incumbent (R) Senator Jeremy Miller, residing in Winona, Minn., faced another Winona native by the name of (DFL) Sarah Kruger. In the end, Miller capture 24,795 (57.65%) of the votes in District 28, while Kruger reeled in 18,170 (42.24%) of the votes.
Out of 98 precincts located in the counties of Fillmore, Houston, and Winona, Kruger fell short with only winning 15 of those precincts. She was strong in Lanesboro, Whalan, La Crescent and Winona. Miller won over the remaining 83 precincts, which means he will be serving another term.
District 28A
– State Representative
In the race between incumbent Republican Gregory M. Davids and DFL-endorsed Jordan Fontenello, Davids won the election with 14,696 (63.65%) of the votes in District 28A – which consists of Fillmore and Houston Counties. Meanwhile, Fontenello won over 8,344 (36.14%) of the voters.
Out of 64 precincts in District 28A, Davids won 60 while Fontenello claimed victory in four precincts located in Lanesboro, La Crescent, and Whalan.
County Commissioner
In Fillmore County, Marc Prestby will remain in his seat for another term as a county commissioner for District 5. Challenger Tony Webber captured 922 (46.35%) of the votes in District 5, while Presby claimed victory with 1,062 (53.39%) of the votes.
For Houston County, Dewey Severson claimed victory with 1,459 (62.16%) of the votes, while his opponent Scott Yeiter received support from 876 (37.32%) of the voters.
School District Questions
For the Fillmore Central School District, the following question was on the ballot.
“The board of Independent School District No. 2198 (Fillmore Central), Minnesota has proposed to renew the existing property tax referendum authorization of $172.14 per pupil that is scheduled to expire after taxes payable in 2020. The proposed referendum revenue authorization would be first levied in 2020 for taxes payable in 2021 and applicable for ten (10) years unless otherwise revoked or reduced as provided by law. Shall the renewal of the expiring property tax referendum proposed by the board of Independent School District No. 2198 (Fillmore Central) be approved?”
A total of 72.84% (1,845) Falcons fans voted in favor of renewing the property tax referendum.
The Mabel-Canton School District voters were presented three questions.
1) The board of Independent School District No. 238 (Mabel-Canton Public School) has proposed to renew the school districts existing operating referendum revenue authorization of $803.10 per pupil which is scheduled to expire after taxes payable in 2021. The proposed renewed operating referendum revenue authorization would be applicable for ten years, beginning with taxes payable in 2022, unless otherwise revoked or reduced as provided by law. Shall the increase in the revenue proposed by the board of Independent School District No. 238 be approved? This was easily supported with 74.49% (797) votes in favor of renewing the existing operating referendum.
2) The board of Independent School District No. 238 (Mabel-Canton Public School) has proposed to renew the school districts existing operating referendum revenue authorization of $803.10 per pupil which is scheduled to expire after taxes payable in 2021. The proposed renewed operating referendum revenue authorization would be applicable for ten years, beginning with taxes payable in 2022, unless otherwise revoked or reduced as provided by law. Shall the increase in the revenue proposed by the board of Independent School District No. 238 be approved? A total of 60.55% voted “yes.”
3) Shall the school board of Independent School District No. 238 (Mabel-Canton Public School) be authorized to issue its general obligation school building bonds in an amount not to exceed $5,825,000 to provide funds for the acquisition and betterment of school sites and facilities, including improvements to toilets, HVAC systems, roofing, windows, and the gymnasium, and other associated deferred maintenance, and accessibility upgrades at the Mabel-Canton Public School? This question yeilded 58.96% (612) support from voters.
