Thanks to our local keepers of history

May 21, 2018 by Jason Sethre

In this special Memorial Day section, dedicated to those who served in our U.S. military, we honor Fillmore County’s men who served in the War of 1812.

Fortunately, we have a wealth of knowledge residing at the Fillmore County Historical Center & Genealogy Library in Fountain, Minn.  Her name is Debra Richardson, and she is the FCHC Executive Director.

As I visited with Richardson to discuss some story ideas for the Memorial Day section, she presented an opportunity to reflect on 12 Fillmore County men who served in the War of 1812.  At the FCHC, there is a display case, presenting all of Richardson’s findings.

In this special Memorial Day section, we are presenting their stories, which is all credited to Richardson.  The stories about each of the 12 men, along with the photos of their cemetery headstones, were all provided by FCHC Executive Director Debra Richardson.

And, these stories wouldn’t be available without Richardson taking the lead on a project back in 2011 to honor these 12 men during a War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration that took place on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

As I visited with Richardson at the FCHC, she explained how the children of these 12 men went on to serve in The American Civil War, the Spanish American War, and many more.  Surely, many of our readers will recognize some of these last names.

On this Memorial Day, we hope that our readers appreciate this piece of history as we reflect on those who served.
