Life is full of surprises. An old friend calls you out of the blue. The weather forecast calls for a nice sunny day and it storms. The Minnesota Timberwolves are in the NBA Playoffs after 20 years! My brother-in-law died last week…
We really never know what will happen in life. We’re often surprised and sometimes question God. Reading through the book of Job recently, in all that Job went through, he makes a powerful statement concerning the sovereignty and the goodness of God. “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes – I and not another. How my heart yearns within me!” Job 19:25-27
There are no guarantees with the weather, or especially Minnesota sports teams, or how much time we have to live this life, but of this we can be sure – the Bible says we’ll all stand before God someday and if our faith is in the one whom Job called his Redeemer, heaven awaits. Thinking about my brother-in-law dying at a young age, I think of his love for God and his relationship with Jesus. He, like Job, didn’t always understand, but trusted God no matter the struggle, no matter the surprise.
Whatever the surprise, God is there. Whatever the surprise, God calls us to trust him. Whatever the surprise, as believers in Jesus, we can say like Job, “I know that my Redeemer lives and my heart yearns to see him.”
