On the morning of Friday, September 27, a few residents of Preston, Minn., awoke to find their political signs had been removed from their property.
Initially, concerned individuals shared on social media that this was a politically targeted action carried out by those with opposing political views.
According to Christine DeVries, co-chairing the Fillmore County DFL along with her husband Jon DeVries, over 20 signs have been stolen from locations across various Preston neighborhoods. She said, “All of the Harris-Walz signs were taken. In a few cases, all signs went missing.” Even the Harris-Walz sign in their yard was missing.
She assumes the theft took place on Thursday evening. She also shared that one Preston resident found discarded signs at the little park south of the veterinary clinic.
Christine DeVries has been in touch with law enforcement, sharing that Preston Police Chief Blaise Sass is continuing the investigation.
Jon DeVries replaced all the signs within about 24 hours.
According to Chief Sass, this appears to be a homecoming prank. He said the investigation is ongoing. Since it involves juveniles, no further information could be provided. There have been no charges filed at this time. Chief Sass said that “theft is still theft and will be treated as such.”
A few residents of Harmony, Minn., had a similar situation with their political signs stolen that same evening. Sheriff DeGeorge said that more people had yet to be interviewed, so their investigation was ongoing.
