#5 Caledonia Tops Chatfield, Cotter Twice, Takes Control of East
Caledonia softball (5-1, 6-1) proved itself the top ‘C’ school in the TRC this year with a trio of wins over formidable foes Chatfield and Cotter/Hope Lutheran. In a key conference-division leaders battle with the
Gophers (5-0, 7-0), a pair of unearned first inning runs were pivotal. Warrior Adrienne Lange twice put the ball in the air in the game’s opening at bat, but both catchable pop-ups were not secured. She reached on an error, then stole second, and scored on an Avery Augedahl single. The Warriors added another run in the inning, as Paizley Lange beat a two-out fielder’s-choice throw to second base, allowing Augedahl to score. Lily Wiebke collected the RBI. Those were the game’s only two runs until late. Chatfield went 0-for-6 hitting with runners in scoring position, stranding runners at second thrice, at third once. Augedahl essentially iced things in the bottom of the sixth, hitting the left-centerfield gap with a two-run double. The Warriors handed the Gophers their first loss via 4-0 final. Augedahl did big work on the mound (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K, Win) and accounted for all four Warrior runs (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R). She recorded strikeouts in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to end Gopher threats. A-Lange (0-3) scored twice. Elsa Blum was 2-for-4. Katryn Johnson (7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 6 K) pitched solidly but took the loss for the Gophers. The Warriors then hosted usual TRC-East top dog Cotter/HL for a doubleheader. Game one was tied 1-1 through six and half innings. Augedahl led off the bottom with a solo home run. Three batters later, Brairy Proulx blasted a two-run home run. The big flies gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead which held as the final. Augedahl (7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, Win) struck out 12 and accounted for three of four Warriors runs (2-3, 2B, HR #2, RBI, 2 R). Proulx (2-3, HR #2, 2 RBI, R) also had two hits. Blum (1-3) added an RBI-single in the fourth. Cotter scored its sole run (also in the fourth) on a one hit, a couple stolen bases, and an error. In the second game, the Warriors scored four runs in the first. Augedahl and Blum had doubles, the later scoring the former. After a walk, Proulx hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to make it 4-0. The sophomore plated another Warrior run in the third with a two-out single. The Ramblers scored a couple in the sixth, but the Warriors posted the 5-2 win. Proulx (2-3, HR #3, R) drove in four of five Warrior runs. Blum (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) also had multiple hits. Augedahl (7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1-4, R) struck out 12. She is now 9-1. Vivian Kittleson (1-3) also scored. Ashlyn Reinhart (1-2) added a double. Ava Mask (7 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) took the loss but accounted for both Rambler runs (1-3, RBI, R). Chad Augedahl’s Class AA #5 Warriors (8-1, 9-1) lead La Crescent/Hokah (5-2, 6-3) in the TRC-East.
Hurricanes Walk-It-Off Versus Rebels
In a very key SEC softball game, Houston got a huge win in walk-off fashion versus Southland. In a match-up of the league’s top two teams, Houston jumped out 5-1 after three innings only for Rebels Hailey Lowe and Laney Weis to hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game 5-5 in the top of the seventh. In Houston’s bottom with two out, Claire Frauenkron doubled. Twin sister Caidence authored the game-winning RBI-single, scoring pinch runner Hailey Stark for the walk-off 6-5 win! The win pulled the Hurricanes (5-1, 9-2) near even with the Rebels (6-1, 7-2) atop the SEC race. Claire (2-2, two 2B, RBI, 2 R) and Caidence (1-3, 2 RBI) Frauenkron led the way. Aspen Peterson (1-3, 2B, RBI) and Emily Botcher (7 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, Win, 1-3, 2B, RBI) also did work. The Hurricanes also topped Rushford-Peterson 12-1 in five innings a day prior. Despite a Blip, Gophers Get to 10 Wins
Chatfield softball’s week was not perfect, but they won four games including a high-scoring dramatic one. Courtesy of a seven-run sixth, they first took out fellow East unbeaten Dover-Eyota (4-0, 5-1) in six innings, 16-4. Grace Finley (2-4, 2 R) hit her second home run and drove in five runs. Kendyl Nolte was 3-for-3 (RBI, R). Rylee Urban (4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, Win, 2-3 R), Makenna Dornack (1-4, 2 RBI, R), Katryn Johnson (1-4, 2 RBI, R, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K), Olivia Karver (1-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R), and Brynn Horsman (1-3, 2B, R) also contributed. The blip was then a 4-0 loss at #5 Caledonia (See “Softball: Caledonia Tops Chatfield, Cotter Twice, Takes Control of East”). Brent Berge’s group rallied with a crazy win over Pine Island. The Gophers led 5-0, trailed 6-5, led 10-6, and trailed 13-10 heading to their last at bat. In the bottom of the seventh, the first three Gophers reached. Dornack authored an RBI-double to make it 13-11. A Kendyl Nolte RBI-ground-out then scored G-Finley, making it 13-12 (with two out). Brittin Ruskell then singled to deep second, scoring Dornack, tying the game 13-13! O-Karver then doubled to put runners on second and third, a second straight hit just off a PI glove. Madyson Proper then lined a shot to left-center, scoring Ruskell for the game-winner! Chatfield came back for the 14-13 victory! Dornack (2-3, 2B) hit her second home run with a trio of RBIs and runs scored. Johnson (3-5, R) also drove in three while starting, going out, but finishing the game on the mound for the win (5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 K). Karver also turned an outfielder double-play, catching a fly-out, then throwing out an PI runner at home, pivotally ending a bases loaded, one-out threat in the sixth. A night later, Chatfield took two from PEM. They took game one 11-1 in five innings, utilizing a seven-run fourth. Dornack started her huge day by going 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run scored.
