Softball/Baseball: Massive Comeback Highlights R-P/FC Ball Series

Baseball and softball teams from R-P and FC/L each played a doubleheader. Softball featured a crazy comeback. The Trojans took game one 12-4  Shelby Tesch (3-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, Win) led the way.  Lindsey Hoiness (2-2, RBI, 2 R), Allanah Skalet (2-4, 2 R), Ariana Bettinger (1-4, 2B, RBI), Delaney Vaughn (1-5, 2B, RBI), and Destiny Corcoran (1-1, 2B, RBI) also did work for the Trojans. Hailey Erickson (1-3, 2 RBI), Jensyn Storhoff (2-3), and Gwen Lieb (2-4, R) led FC/L. Game two was probably the greatest softball comeback in Journal-Sports history. FC/L led 14-4 heading to bottom of the sixth. Down to their last out, with just one on base, R-P scored three and staved off the 10-run rule. Trailing 14-7 an inning later, they were again down to their last out, bases empty. Nine straight Trojans then reached, seven scored, as R-P pulled even 14-14! The Trojans then had three two-out hits in the eighth. Delaney Vaughn’s game-winning RBI-single stoked an improbable 15-14 win in eight innings! Vaughn (4-6, 2B, 5 RBI, 2 R), Brielle Schneider (4-5, 2B, RBI, 3 R), Torryn Schneider (2-5, 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R), and Hoiness (3-5, two 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R) had huge days. Tesch (1-3, 2 RBI), Skalet (2-4, 3 R), Lilly West (2-5, 2 R), Bettinger (2-4, 2B), and Morgan Rye (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, Win) also contributed. Storhoff (2-3, RBI) scored five times for FC/L. Erickson (2-4, 2B) drove in four runs. Caylee Gulbranson (2-4, 2 R), Norah Nagel (1-4, RBI, 2 R), Josie Corson (1-2, 2 R), and Haley O’Connor (0-1, four BBs, 2 RBI, 2 R) also did work. The baseball game saw FC/L’s early 4-0 lead cut to 4-2 in the sixth. Falcon pitcher Levi Rogers came in with the bases loaded and got the final out. He retired the last four batters of the game for a 4-2 FC win. Thomas Pikula (2-4, 2B, 2 R, 5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, Win), Rogers (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Save), Joey Pederson (2-4, R), and Tyson Sprenger (1-2, RBI) carried the Falcon flag. R-P was led by Carson Johnson (1-3, R), Owen Lange (1-3, R), and Jonah Bunke (2-4). Elias Johnson (7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, Loss) took the loss. In game two, R-P scored two in the top of the fifth to close to down 3-2. A half inning later, Falcon Bridon Bahl had a two-run double to make it 5-2. FC/L prevailed 7-2. Clayton Schoepski (3-4, 2 R, RBI), Bahl (1-3, 2 RBI), Sprenger (1-2, 2B, R, 4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, Win), Pederson (1-3, R, 2 RBI), Reid Olson (1-3, 2B, RBI, R), and Jarek Schultz (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 1 K, Save) did work. The Trojans were led by Cole Thompson (3-3, RBI), Connor Vaughn (1-2, RBI, R), and Cayden Lea (5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, Loss). FC/L improved to 7-5 overall. R-P fell to 6-5 in the TRC, 6-7 overall.

Softball: Cougars Up Win Streak to Seven

Mabel-Canton softball moved its win streak to seven games by sweeping a pair of doubleheaders with SEC strugglers Lyle/Pacelli and Schaeffer Academy. Versus the Athletics, game one fell 11-0 in five innings.  Lydia Vatland (2-3, 2B) and Kailey Ingvalson (2-3, R) each drove in four runs. Kira Snyder (3-3, two 2B, 2 R), Hailee Eiken (1-2, 2B, RBI, 2 R), Hope Erickson (1-3, RBI, 2 R), and Isabella Torgerson (1-3, RBI, 2 R) helped on offense. Tylar Wenthold (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K) pitched the win. In game two, Erickson (4-6, R), Lainey Hosting (3-6, two 2B, 3 R), and Eiken (2-6, 2B, 3B, 3 R) each drove in three runs in a 23-5 win, where M-C had a 12-run top of the seventh. Torgerson (2-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R), Vatland (1-4, RBI, 3 R), and Vayda Luhman (1-1, RBI, 2 R) also contributed. Both games with S.A. were 15-0 wins in four innings. M-C had just five hits in game one, but walked 16 times. Erickson (2-2, 2B, R) drove in three runs. Wenthold (4 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K) gave up just one hit while driving in two runs (1-1, 3B). Snyder (1-2, RBI) and Whitney Williams (3 R) helped.  In game two, M-C had six hits, walked 10 times. Vatland (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, R), Erickson (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Snyder (1-3, 2 RBI) did the biggest damage. Wenthold (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K, 1-2, RBI) got the win to improve her record to 9-3. She has 126 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. M-C (7-2, 9-3) is now in a tie with Houston (6-2, 11-3) behind Southland (8-1, 10-2) in the SEC race.
