Softball/Baseball: GMLOK Hosts Tight Games With Houston; Bulldog Softball Goes 3-0

On a Monday night, baseball and softball teams from Houston and GMLOK played high-scoring to-the-wire affairs, battling each other, and windy and cool conditions. On the softball diamond, the by-record underdog Bulldogs (2-2, 3-4) controlled things (most of the way) versus the #6 in A Hurricanes (4-0, 6-1). Mark Eickhoff’s group scored seven in the first two innings to lead 7-3 after three. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Candace Hanson singled, but three runs scored when an outfield error allowed the ball to roll to the fence. GMLOK took a 10-4 lead into the seventh inning. But with two out, six straight Hurricanes reached. Rylee Boldt notably hit a two-run home run. A Kylie Stinson RBI-single made it a two-run game, but an outfield error allowing the ball to the go to the fence enabled Stinson to come all the way around and score. Suddenly, Houston was down 10-9. Claire Frauenkron then doubled, putting the tying run at second. But senior pitcher Aspen Kolling then made a diving stab of an infield roller, and got out number three at first, preserving the 10-9 Bulldog win. Kolling (7 IP, 6 H, 9 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 7 K) got the win while also driving in three runs (1-3, 2B). Jaelee Hagstrom (2-3, 2 RBI, R) also drove in two, Hanson (2-4, RBI) had two hits, Mollie Voigt (1-3) scored twice. Boldt (1-2, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R), Cl. Frauenkron (2-4, 2B, RBI), Julia Swenson (1-3, 2B, 3 R), and Caitlin Brand (1-3, 2B, RBI) led the ‘Canes. Emily Botcher (7 IP, 7 H, 10 R, 9 ER) struck out 10 but walked eight in defeat. The baseball game was even more wild. By-record underdog GMLOK (1-3, 1-5) watched Houston (4-0, 4-1) score 11 third inning runs to lead 16-7 midway thru the frame. But ‘Cane starting pitcher, standout Morgan Rohweder, left the game after 3 2/3 innings (109 pitches, 6 H, 10 R, 5 ER, 7 BB, 7 K). GMLOK’s starter, Caden Reiter pitched four innings before leaving (94 pitches). Brad Reiter was able to call upon senior Tyson Stevens in relief and he did not allow a run (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K). It allowed the Bulldogs to slowly comeback, as they scored the game’s final 10 runs. In the bottom of the seventh, GMLOK came to the plate down 16-15. Four straight Bulldogs reached. A Blake Hershberger RBI-single tied the game. A wild pitch then allowed Sam Howard to score the game-winner, as the Bulldogs came back from down nine for the 17-16 win! On top of collecting the pitching win, Stevens (1-2, 3 RBI, 4 R) hit his second home run of the year. Reiter (3-5, 2 R) drove in four runs. Howard (3-5, RBI, 2 R) and Hershberger (2-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) also collected multiple hits. Parker Johnson scored thrice. Hurricanes Hector Steinfeldt (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R), Rohweder (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R), Grayden Beckman (3-6, 2B, 2 RBI, R), and Archer Semling (3-5, two 2B, 3 R) were credited with three hits, Zach Olson (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, 3 R), Dawson Pedretti (2-5, RBI, R), C.J. Wruck (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Coltin Groth (2-3, RBI, 2 R) each with two. Houston out-hit GMLOK 20 to 11, including notching seven extra base hits to GMLOK’s one. But the Bulldogs walked four while Houston pitching walked nine. Houston is 4-1 in the SEC, 4-2 overall. After topping Houston, GMLOK softball then beat Schaeffer Academy and Fillmore Central/Lanesboro for the 3-0 week. The Lions were thoroughly overmatched, as GMLOK had a 20-run third inning and walked 15 times in a four inning 23-1 victory. Mollie Voigt (3-4, 3B, RBI, 3 R), Hailee Warren (2-3, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, 4 R), and Jaelee Hagstrom (2-2, 4 RBI, 2 R) did the biggest offensive damage. Emma Howard (1-2, 2 RBI, 3 R), Cheyenne Bakken (1-2, 2 RBI, R), Miranda Nagel (2-3, RBI, 2 R), and Candace Hanson (1-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) also contributed. Aspen Kolling (4 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) gave up just one hit in getting the win. GMLOK then broke a 2-2 tie with Fillmore Central/Lanesboro with a four-run top of the sixth. Kolling had a key two-run single. The Bulldogs posted the 6-2 win, led by Kolling’s double-duty (7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, Win, 2-4, 4 RBI). Voigt (2-4, 2B, RBI, R), Howard (1-3, 2B, R), and Hanson (1-2, R) helped. Norah Nagel (2-3) drove in both Falcon runs. Jensyn Storhoff (1-4, R, 7 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB) struck out eight in defeat. GMLOK improved to 4-2 in the SEC, 6-4 overall.
