Signe Rosalyn Cone, age 81, of Rushford, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, surrounded by her family.
Signe was born on December 12, 1942, in Fairmont, Minn., the youngest daughter of Joseph and Lydia (Simon) Holland. She grew up with her sister Jane on the family farm. She attended country school and was a 1960 graduate of Elmore High School. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Pilot Grove, Minn., and was confirmed in the Christian faith in 1956. She then moved to Northfield where she attended St. Olaf College and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Sociology in 1964. On June 13, 1964, she was united in marriage to Roger C. Cone at the East Chain Lutheran Church in rural East Chain. They lived in Austin, where Roger was a chiropractor and she was the director of the activity center for special needs children for two years. Their son Ted was born in 1966 and the family moved to Winona, where Roger started a new practice in 1967. Their daughter Lisle was born in 1968, Sara in 1971, Rachel in 1973 and Katie in 1975. Roger and Signe retired and moved to Rushford in 2015. Signe was a dedicated member of her church over the years and was currently a member of Rushford Lutheran. She loved to create opportunities for Christian women to gather, study and work together to complete the tasks of the church. She loved to work with the special needs individuals at Home & Community Options and held various offices there over the years. She was a strong Republican and greatly enjoyed taking part in the area caucuses. Signe was a community-minded woman who had the knack to bring others together for a good cause. Her greatest love was her family. Signe loved to travel and visited many destinations over the years including Norway, Italy, Russia, Alaska, Costa Rica, Israel, Mexico, Hawaii and spent many an anniversary in Door County, Wisconsin. Special memories were made with her grandchildren during the annual summer weekends at Neshonoc Campground in West Salem, Wis.
Signe will be sadly missed by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Roger Cone; her son Ted (Lynette) Cone, her daughters Lisle (Dave) Schocker, Sara Cone, Rachel (Jeff) Miller and Katie (Daryl) Schulz; grandchildren Tyler Miller, Caraline Miller, Haley (Jon) Schotte, Gracie Cone, Joe Cone, Davis Schulz, Lauren Schulz and Meredith Schulz; and one great-grandchild due in September.
She is further survived by her sister Jane Gjevre and nephews Mark (Jane), Bryan, Joel (Kati) and their families, brother-in-law James (Ronda) Cone, niece Patricia (Wes) Winnekins, nephews Steven (Lisa) Cone, Robert (Janet) Cone and their families and nephews Bobby, Brad (Vonnie) and Dave (Karen) Cone and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Lydia Holland, her special “grandparents” Sandy and Eleanor Sandford, brother-in-law Phillip Gjevre and in-laws Ross and Adeline Cone.
Signe devoted her life to following the Lord and raising her children. Her greatest love was her family. She doted on her grandchildren and made holidays and birthdays special. She was known for making pumpkin muffins and carrying on family traditions. She never forgot a birthday and enjoyed giving gifts. Family was so important to her and she loved hosting get togethers.
She enjoyed reading her Bible, devotions and magazines. She had a deep faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a prayer warrior and was willing to always offer love and support. She especially loved orchids and had a green thumb. She truly was an amazing woman. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her strong faith, kind heart and generosity and love for her family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Rushford Lutheran Church. Pastor Steve Chellew will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, Minn.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services.
