We just had a Workers Appreciation Banquet last Saturday evening for all those in our church who volunteer themselves, giving of their time and energy for the ministry of the church and community. There are those who greet, usher, teach classes, make coffee, work in the kitchen. Some take care of babies in the nursery and some visit those in jail. Some take care of tech, grounds, maintenance, visitation and prayer ministry. Others serve in children, youth, missions and nursing home ministry. Some use their musical talents, leadership skills and the list goes on and on.
As their pastor, I’m so thankful for all those who serve in our church and outside our church to their friends, neighbors and those they don’t even know. The Apostle Paul refers to the church as the body of Christ and how we are to work together to accomplish God’s will. He speaks of the variety of giftings we each have and the need for each other, as we answer God’s call to serve and do our part as members of his body, the church.
I’m reminded of Jesus teaching on the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25, where he contrasts those who serve others and those who don’t. Verse 40 says, “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” And so, this Thanksgiving I give thanks for those who serve and do for the least of these. I give thanks to God, as “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:7. And as the Doxology so clearly proclaims, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow!”
