As many of you know, I have great respect for the theology expressed in traditional Christian hymns. Recently while reading some devotional material, Harry Emerson Fosdick’s great hymn from 1930 really spoke to me in light of all the things going on in our world. The powerful words of the hymn were inspiring and spoke to my heart. I would like to share Harry Emerson Fosdick’s great hymn with you … Please think about what is being expressed in this great old hymn written in the days leading up to World War I. “God of Grace and God of Glory” (p. 577 of the United Methodist Hymnal)
“God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; crown thine ancient church’s story; bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.
“Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the living of these days, for the living of these days.
“Cure thy children’s warring madness, bend our pride to thy control, shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal, lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.
“Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the search for thy salvation be our glory evermore.
“Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore.”
This great, old hymn by Harry Emerson Fosdick really speaks to me. Maybe it speaks to you, too.
I hope you have a blessed and joyful day and please know just how much you are loved. God’s blessings always.
Your friend,
Pastor Mark Woodward
