When David Phillips made plans for closing his six newspapers on Friday, March 27, 2020, including Bluff Country Reader, The Chatfield News, Fillmore County News Leader, Rushford Tri-County Record, Spring Grove Herald and Spring Valley Tribune, the Fillmore County Journal purchased the assets of his newspapers. Along with purchasing the trade names of each newspaper, we also acquired the archives of every newspaper owned by the Bluff Country Newspaper Group.
These archives are so important because they contain history from our area that is pre-Internet. And, we feel it is important enough to share that history from all of these newspapers that we have dedicated space for a weekly feature titled “Pages from the Past…” Look for the debut in today’s newspaper. Our first spotlight is on the front page of the Chatfield News from 2010 – exactly 10 years ago.
We have newspapers in our archives from publications that no longer exist and date back to the late 1800s, including titles like The Preston Times and Spring Valley Mercury. There have been many newspapers that have come and gone over the past 164 years in our region. We consider ourselves pretty fortunate to be the guardians of these treasured newspapers of record. They have stories to share as a matter of reflection. I even enjoy reading the advertisements from long ago. Wait until you see a few we have coming up over the next few weeks.
