It’s another election year, which means our office is a busy beehive.
Our Journal team has been fielding questions from phone calls, e-mails and readers at the front desk, asking about the policy for submitting Letters to the Editor or purchasing an advertisement to endorse their favorite candidate. Here’s what readers can expect.
Letters to Editor
As has been our policy for a number of years, from July 1 until Election Day we do not publish letters to the editor that are “for or against” any candidates.
If readers want to get a letter published, keep your message topic-based. Focus on the issues facing your community, the region or our state, and what you feel should be a consideration when voting in this upcoming election. Don’t reference specific candidates.
October 26 will be the last day we publish any election-related opinion pieces prior to Election Day.
Any editorial submissions, including Letters to the Editor and Guest Commentaries will be published at the discretion of the publisher.
Candidate Q & A
The Journal team will coordinate publishing the candidate Q & A feature over a three week span. Candidates will be offered the opportunity to participate for a small fee.
The publishing schedule will be as follows:
• September 21: County Commissioners, District 26B State Representative, and District 26 State Senator.
• September 28: City Council and Mayor
• October 5: School Board
We are publishing the candidate Q & A feature earlier than in the past due to the increased number of mail-in balloting and early voting.
Political Advertisements
We will not publish any mudslinging ads. So, nobody will be bashing any candidates in our newspaper.
All political ads will be published at the discretion of the publisher. And, all political ads will need to be prepaid.
