Norman Bergman, age 87, of Grand Meadow, Minn., died on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus, in Rochester, Minn.
According to Norman’s wishes, no public services will be held.
Norman Clarence Bergman was born on March 16, 1938, to Clarence and Rose (Himrich) Bergman in Mandan, N. Dak. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1956. After high school, Norman enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he spent three years at the Institute of Technology. Norman married Shirley Christopherson on June 4, 1961, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, Minn. He then transferred to Mankato State College where he earned his Bachelor of Science in 1961, and then his Master of Science in 1966. From 1961-1967, Norman taught chemistry, physics, and eighth grade math at Arcadia Public School in Arcadia, Wis., Corwith-Wesley Community School in Corwith, Iowa, and then at the Mapleton School District in Mapleton, Minn. In 1971, Norman started what would become a 33-year career at Hormel Foods as a chemist in their research department, retiring in 2001.
Norm truly enjoyed his trips to Ballard’s Resort in Baudette, Minn., to go fishing. He was an avid Minnesota sports fan, indulging in watching the Minnesota Twins, and all Minnesota Gophers sports. Norm also loved to cook. Family gatherings and special occasions were made memorable by Norm’s culinary skills, particularly for his brownies and his rosettes.
Norman will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley. He is also survived by grandson Anthony (Brittny) DeSantis, great-grandchild Zelda DeSantis, his sister Carlene, and nephews Derek and Scott Ruffcorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Ann Bergman and a daughter in infancy, and his brother Lyle Bergman.
