Before I get to far into this commentary, I need to give another big Thank You to everyone who made it possible for Pat and I to be Grand Marshals of last year’s Trout Days celebration. What a great honor for us to represent our city and community.
As Memorial Day comes around this year, many of our programs and ceremonies have either been canceled or modified. I hope the circumstances we are now enduring do not deter us from taking a little time to remember those who have given so much. In addition to honoring those who have passed, we must not forget those who currently serve. The memories of those gone should motivate us to do as much as possible to make our community and country better.
Those of us who have served continue to help our friends and neighbors. As a long time member of the VFW and American Legion, my wife and I have had many opportunities to give back to our community.
To those of you who may not have been active in community service, I really encourage you to get out and help others through your church, schools and the many other volunteer groups.Believe me when I say it is very gratifying to give a helping hand to those in need.
As a young soldier serving in Vietnam, I saw firsthand the poverty and suffering in that war torn country. We all need to be more appreciative of everything we have in this country.
As we continue our ongoing battle with the coronavirus, I hope we do so with compassion and patience as this disaster plays out. Please remember the graduating Class of 2020 and everyone else affected by this pandemic.
This “Old Soldier” will be forever grateful for having been born in a free and democratic country.
Let’s all go out and do just a little more during this difficult time to make our community and county better.
God Bless the USA
The “Old Soldier”
