REGULAR MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT #239
The regular meeting of the Rushford-Peterson School District #239 was called to order by Chairperson John Linder at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2020, at the Rushford-Peterson Schools Forum Room, 1000 Pine Meadows Lane, Rushford, MN 55971.
Members Present: Chris Grindland, Valarie Howe, Joyce Iverson, John Linder, Jeff Michel, Bonnie Prinsen & Kathy Wade
Members Absent: None
Administration Present: Superintendent Jon Thompson, Jake Timm, Angela Shepard and Lisa Lawston
District Office Personnel: Laura Hahn
Motion by Prinsen, seconded by Wade to adopt the agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS:
Leandra Duneman addressed the board regarding concerns about distance learning. Emily Paulson also addressed the board with concerns about distance learning.
Motion by Michel, seconded by Iverson to approve the following consent agenda items: June 15, 2020 Regular Monthly Meeting Minutes; Donations – Judith Eger – In Memory of Barbara Gile – $25, R-P Booster Club for the Summer Weightlifting Program – $2,000; June hand payables, wires & payroll liabilities in the amount of $325,803.90; June payroll in the amount of $361,572.01; July board bills in the amount of $680,619.78; Personnel: Hire of Joel Hinke – Assistant Football Coach. Motion carried unanimously.
Mr. Thompson, Mr. Timm, Mrs. Shepard and Mrs. Lawston reviewed the school district’s plan for in-person learning for all students for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Surveys that were given to staff and families were reviewed. The Governor will be providing school districts more information regarding expectations for the start of the school year on July 30, 2020.
There was a lengthy discussion among the board, Mr. Thompson and Dana Thompson regarding the possibility of hiring a school nurse.
Motion by Iverson, seconded by Grindland to proceed with advertising for a school nurse position. Motion carried unanimously.
The board viewed the MSHSL “Why We Play” training video.
Motion by Prinsen, seconded by Wade to approve the resolution to renew membership with the MSHSL for the 2020-2021 school year. With a roll call vote of 7:0, motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Wade, second by Iverson to approve and adopt the resolution approving the Annual 10-year updated Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Plan. With a roll call vote of 7:0, motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Grindland, second by Michel to approve the Agreement to Reimburse for Student Membership with Hiawatha Valley Education District for the 2020-2021 school year. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Iverson, second by Wade to keep the 2020-2021 lunch prices the same as the 2019-2020 prices. (Breakfast costs K-5th Grade: $1.55; 6-12th Grade: $1.60; Lunch costs: K-5th Grade: $2.35; 6-12th Grade: $2.45 Extra Milk: $.45.) Motion carried unanimously.
The board reviewed the bids that were submitted for gas, bread and milk for the 2020-21 school year.
Motion by Wade, seconded by Iverson to accept the bid from Pam’s Corner for gasoline for 2020-21 school year. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Prinsen, seconded by Michel to accept the bids from Kemps for Milk and Pan-o-Gold for Bread for the 2020-21 school year. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Iverson, seconded by Prinsen to appoint Laura Hahn as Assistant Clerk to assist with the school board election process. Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Prinsen seconded by Iverson to approve the Resolution Establishing Dates for Filing Affidavits of Candidacy. Motion carried unanimously. With a roll call vote of 7:0, motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Prinsen, seconded by Michel to approve the agreement with Hiawatha Valley Mental Health for the 2020-21 school year. Motion carried unanimously.
Superintendent Thompson presented the Superintendent’s report.
Lisa Lawston presented the Community Education Report.

Motion by Iverson, seconded by Michel, to adjourn the regular meeting at 7:18 PM. Motion carried unanimously.
