Lowell C. Johnson, formerly of Mabel, died Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Chosen Valley Care Center at the age of 83.
Lowell was born on April 27, 1938, in Decorah, Iowa, to Gordon and Florence (Johnson) Johnson. He grew up helping on the family farm and attending school in Mabel, graduating as a Mabel Wildcat in 1956. After graduation, he attended college at the University of Minnesota for a year and then continued farming with his father back in the Mabel area.
In 1959, he met and married Ardath Masters, in Harmony, Minn. They later divorced. To this union, three children were born: Natalie (Alan) Sagdalen, Lino Lakes, Minn., Daniel (Robyn) Johnson, Altoona, Wis., and Darrin (Terri Brand) Johnson, Rushford, Minn.
After farming for many years, he moved to White Bear Lake, Minn., and lived there for 11 years. He thoroughly enjoyed working at Ace Hardware until retirement. After retirement, he moved back to the area he loved and settled in Rushford, Minn., where he had resided since 2010. He had a good work ethic and found purpose in helping on the Hirsch farm with chores and lawn mowing. He enjoyed family gatherings, fishing the best trout streams, watching sports and NASCAR and Thomas Kincade puzzles.
He is survived by his children, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren: Rebekah Sagdalen (Grace), Whitney (Joe) Andert (Shelbey and Sawyer), Andy (Jennifer) Johnson (Joel and Kaleb), Adam (Savanna) Johnson (Skielyn, Kiser and Bentleigh), Leah (Tommy) Craft (Chloe), Alex Johnson, Ellen (Steve Witt) Johnson, (Rebeca, Aydin, and Joanna), Bradly (Emily) Johnson, Gregery (Rajah) Johnson (Syndi and Raylei), Tyler Johnson, Arwen Johnson, Rebecca Shepherd (Trenton), Kris (Ashley) Shepherd (Emma, Elivia, Kaden, Elenah), Clarissa Driscoll and Samantha Smith. Also his sister, Patricia (Truman) Dahl of Rushford, Minn., niece Margo Aakre, nephews Randy (Kathy), Mark (Peggy) and Tim (Becky) Dahl, and many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Saturday, February 26, at the Mabel First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
