Lion ladies complete net sweep of Schaeffer Lions

October 6, 2021 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls employed the entire Lion lineup while rolling past the visiting Schaeffer Academy Lions during the Sept. 30 Homecoming volleyball victory. The 25-9, 25-14, 25-6 scores were similar to those in Spring Grove’s early-season rout at Rochester.

Schaeffer struggled with Spring Grove servers, who combined for 19 aces. Addyson McHugh served 18 for 19 with 8 aces and then at the net, tallied with a solo block and 7 kills with only one error on 10 attacks. Danika Holty served 12 for 12 with 5 aces. Madilyn Ostern came in to serve a pair of quick winners.

Both teams mounted the same number of attacks at the net, but Spring Grove was far more potent both hitting and blocking. The visiting Lions from Rochester (1-14, 1-9 SEC) were under statistical water with twice as many attacking errors (18) as kills (9) and twice as many service errors (4) as aces (2). A third of those hitting errors were forced by 6 Grove blocks involving seven Grove blockers. Lydia Solum contributed to 3 blocks and Katelyn Kraus 2.

In the absence of setter Rachel Normann, Kendal Van Minsel piloted the offense during the first two sets with 13 of the team’s 14 assists, and Maggie Lile supplied 7 of the 8 assists in set three. While at libero, Lile had 6 digs and put away 3 kills on 5 attacks. Peyton Thompson served 3 for 3 with an ace and had kills on both her attacks while Brielle Neely attacked only four times with 2 kills. Spring Grove improved to 10-6, 6-1 SEC.

The Spring Grove B-team (9-2, 5-1 SEC) also breezed to a season sweep of the other Lions, 2-0 (25-12, 25-4)
