Lion girls swept by M-C, edged late by Randolph

November 2, 2020 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls, like all other Mabel-Canton volleyball opponents, were swept in three sets against the No. 6, state-ranked Cougars on October 20. In sharp contrast two nights later, it was a back-and-forth, five-set setback at Randolph. After winning their first three matches of 2020, the Lions ended the week at 3-2 (3-2 SEC).

Mabel-Canton had more than twice as many kills (29-13) and service aces (16-7). The Lions’ only statistical advantage was in scoring blocks (5-1). SG had only 13 kills while committing 20 hitting errors.

Addyson McHugh led Lion scoring with 5 kills, 2 blocks and 4 ace serves while serving 100% (11 for 11). For M-C, reigning Conference Player of the Year Kenidi McCabe scored with 8 kills and assisted on another 11. Sophie Morken had 5 kills and 14 assists.

Mabel-Canton also won the B-team match (25-21, 25-8) and the freshman match (25-15, 25-11)

Randolph 3, SG 2

(Ran 25-22, SG 25-16, SG 25-20, Ran 25-20, Ran 15-8)

Visiting SG had a 10-point advantage at the net (72-62) but did not hit well at the end of any set. Overall, Randolph (3-1) scored 101 points and Spring Grove 100. The Lions had 10 more offensive points but also committed 10 more errors. SG held a slight edge in serving, 95% to 92%, but Randolph hit with 17% efficiency to 13% for the Lions.

Randolph scored the last seven points to take the fifth set by seven, 15-8. The Rocket offense fueled that fifth-set splurge as well as a strong finish in set four. But equally critical were the final five points of the first set when the Lion attack could not protect a 22-20 Lead. Four SG hitting errors allowed Randolph to escape late to win 25-22.

But the Lions suddenly curtailed errors while dominating set two, 25-16, and then leading throughout set three, 25-20, to take a one-set lead, 2-1. then momentum shifted as Spring Grove miscues reappeared, and the Rockets evened the match by winning the final five points of set four, 25-20.

In set five, the Lions led only once at 7-6 but managed only one kill in their final 14 hits. Randolph won with 3 late kills on 8 attacks.

Grove setter Rachel Normann had a career-high 42 assists and also 7 kills of her own. McHugh had 21 kills and 4 ace blocks; Kenadee Gerard added 13 kills. Julia Halverson had 19 digs, Paige Jahnke 17. Halverson served 29 for 29 with 2 aces.

It was likely the teams’ last match with Randolph departing the SEC next year. The Rockets improved to 3-1, while SG left at 3-2. In the series, the Lions lead 5 to 2.

The Lion B-team (3-2) prevailed 2-1, taking the deciding third set by the closest of margins 15-13. The freshmen won, 2-0.
