The Spring Grove boys remained atop the SEC East Division while dealing two devastating blows to Lanesboro title hopes in one week. The Burros remained in contention throughout the first half of an eventual 28-point home loss (67-39) on Feb. 16, but they were left behind early in a 39-point road rout (63-24) on Feb. 19. Lanesboro came into the week averaging 56 points per game but managed only 63 total while dominated twice by the suffocating Spring Grove defense.
The Burros had entered the week two games behind the Lions in the loss column, but Spring Grove (10-1, 10-1 SEC) all but eliminated Lanesboro (5-6, 5-5 SEC) from the East Division race. Since the series was tied at 47 wins apiece in 2013, Spring Grove has won the last 16 and now lead the series 63 to 47 (since 1948).
Lanesboro swept both B-team matchups, but the rematch went down to the final shot. Meanwhile, Grove took both eighth grade games. The seventh graders split.
Spring Grove 67, at Lanesboro 39
Caden Grinde scored 24 points for the second straight game, and sophomore guard Hunter Holland netted a career-high 15 points. Carson Gerard harvested a game-high 8 rebounds and scored all of his 11 points in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Spring Grove defense limited Lanesboro to mostly 3-point shots and only one trip to the foul line. Burros ballhandlers navigated the trapping Lion defense and shot a respectable 30% from 3-point land (8 for 27), including five treys from Sawyer Johnson. But it would not be enough to keep up with Spring Grove, which shot a hot 57% while scoring 51 points in the lane – mostly from dribble drives.
Lanesboro never led, but after trailing by 10 points, was back within six points at halftime after Johnson’s third 3-ball. But the Lions opened the second half with an 11-to-1 run and maintained double-digit leads thereafter. Lanesboro scored only once during 13 possessions as the spread approached 30 points.
The Burros managed only one offensive rebound after halftime as the Lions won the backboard battle, 29 rebounds to 17. Johnson closed with 15 points and Ryan Holmen 12.
“We were very pleased with the second half play of our team,” said Lion mentor Wade Grinde. “After making a few adjustments, they executed very well on both ends of the floor. Hunter Holland and Carson Gerard became much more involved offensively, and when that happens, we are tough to cover.”

Gerard had career-highs with 20 points and 3 assists while matching a career-best with 8 rebounds. The outcome was not in doubt after Spring Grove surged away with a 26-5 start. After leading 3-2, the Burros scored only once during their next 17 possessions. It was 32-10 at halftime.
Stymied again by the aggressive Lion defense, Lanesboro was again reliant on 3-point shots (20 trey attempts, 19 inside the arc.) Not shooting as well on the road as they had at home, the Burros connected on only 2 of 20 treys (10%), while Spring Grove went 7 for 20 (35%).
The other determining factor was turnovers; the Lions had a season-best seven while Lanesboro lost possession 24 times (16 SG steals). Both teams hit half of their 2-point shots, but the Lions shot a lot more often and went to the foul line for 27 free throws and netted 16 – both season-high charity totals. The Spring Grove defense limited the visitors to only five free throws (0 for 5).
The Lions, while dominating the half-court game, also outscored the visitors 15-to-2 with fast breaks. Lanesboro was most competitive on the backboards; each team had 25 rebounds.
In addition to Gerard’s game-high scoring and rebounding, Caden Grinde put in 15 points along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Tysen Grinde added 12 points and 5 boards. Elijah Solum (6 points) had a game-high 5 thefts plus 5 assists – one of four Lions with more assists than turnovers. Seven different Burros scored, but no one had more than six points (Ben Snyder).

The Lions did not score during their first 15 possessions but trailed only 11-2. They were back within five points at halftime and scored the first six in the second half to go ahead, 19-18. But Lanesboro scored the next eight points and were never caught again.
The game was decided close to the basket. Buoyed by 17 fast-break points, Lanesboro outscored Spring Grove 32-12 in the lane. The Burro full-court defense forced six turnovers, which led to six transition points.
Freshman Jacob Olerud led Lion scoring with 13 points. Sophomore Caleb Griffin and freshman Ethan Crouch each came down with 8 rebounds. Freshman Will Harvey scored 13 for Lanesboro.
The eighth grade game went to Spring Grove, 34-16. The Lanesboro seventh graders prevailed, 38-32.

B-TEAM: LHS 44, at SG 42
A potential game-winning 3-point shot went partway down and came out for Spring Grove. A 3-point basket by Lion freshman Isaac Griffin had tied the score with 2:20 left, and then he tied it again with another trey with 58 seconds remaining. But Burro guard Parker Storhoff hit the winner, a running floater from the baseline, with 49 seconds to play.
Overall, there were five lead changes and seven tie scores. The Lions led by two (12-10) before Lanesboro scored 11 unanswered points. The Burros enjoyed a nine-point lead early in the second half before the Lions took advantage of Lanesboro turnovers to go on a 13-to-3 run for a 29-28 lead. It was then back and forth until the final buzzer.
Griffin tallied 13 points along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists with only 2 turnovers. Olerud put in in 10 points, while Crouch contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds. Three Burros scored in double figures, led by Stephan Schultz with 14 points.
Again, Spring Grove (5-5) relied heavily on 3-point shots but hit only 5 of 22 (23%) and was outshot overall from the field, 46% to 36%. And it could be said the Lions left the game at the foul line. They attempted only six free throws but went only 1 for 6 in a two-point loss. Lanesboro outscored SG by one point from the field and by one point from the foul line.
The undefeated Lion eighth graders (7-0) completed the series sweep, 35-23. The Spring Grove seventh graders (1-4) earned a series split with a 35-23 win.
