Letter to the Editor: Let us out!

June 1, 2020 by Fillmore County Journal

Fillmore County Journal - Weekly Newspaper Serving Southeast Minnesota's Bluff Country - Letter to the Editor

Let us out!

To the Editor,

Going on two months now, we’ve been staying home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In that time, Fillmore County had 13 cases [the time this letter was written]. As of your current issue, 12 have recovered and one has died, leaving the county COVID free. The one Houston County case must have resolved by now.

There is no further need to keep our local businesses closed or to keep our small congregations from worshipping together or to shut down summer programs for children.

I am going to go crazy from being protected, when the enemy continues to be somewhere else, and the enemy itself is really mean, but the consequences of putting everyone on house arrest are worse, in terms of total human suffering. Who has committed suicide, or had a stroke, or been beaten, or lost precarious coping skills or their sobreity, secondary to the fear of COVID-19? More than a baker’s dozen, I would guess. It is time for rural counties with no new cases to be fully open, with testing.

Let’s be perfectly clear about this. The county is “COVID free” (your words) BECAUSE it’s been shut down. Opening up without thinking would be a serious mistake. There are many folks with underlying conditions who simply can’t afford to take the chance of exposure.

How would you propose keeping that person from outside the county who is Covid positive from stopping in at your favorite cafe, tavern, or thrift store? How would you determine which one of your friends who just returned from a trip to Rochester to visit someone and came back home positive?

You may do whatever you wish with your life, but please don’t threaten mine with reckless behavior just because you have cabin fever.

Your argument simply does not hold water nor is it based on any facts. Sticking with just our neighbors we have had 3 little hitlers; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan governors. Only the badger gov has been put in check to date. The chick in Michagan is just nutty to the core. But on the bright side she has guaranteed the state will be red this year, Wis as well. Our lil timmy, along with lax opposition from Republicans continues to RULE. To date ALL state models have been way way off. And for our lol gov to take credit for any of the low cases is like the rooster taking credit for the sun coming up.
We need to realize at this point ( June 6th 2020) that the hurt put on jobs and economy is NOT WORTH THE SAFETY!!!! Wake up Minnesota!!!
