Visiting Spring Grove had only one runner advance to third base, aided by a wild pitch. Isaac Griffin had half of the Lion hits and the only double while batting 2 for 3. Three of those four Spring Grove hits came late against a Warrior reliever after Caledonia starter Ayden Goetzinger had allowed only one hit through the first four innings while issuing five walks and backed up by an errorless defense.
Caledonia, coming off a sterling 21-5 school season, was the second straight undefeated Legion foe faced by the young Lions (1-4), who dropped a fourth straight decision. It was the third consecutive contest in which Spring Grove gave up 10 runs, but it was the first summer shutout. Unlike the springtime high school season, most of the Lions’ summer Legion rivals come from larger Class AA programs. The Lion lineup consisted of one senior, one junior, four sophomores, no freshmen and three eighth graders.
