As the summer season is emerging and I appear to be the last entry from this project, I wanted to give out some important reminders that come with the new season. It is very important to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and to be cautious. Sunscreen has consequences when not used appropriately but it can easily be preventable. Sun exposure without some level of SPF can cause a mild to severe burn that causes discomfort and with prolonged exposure over a span of years can possibly lead to a chance of skin cancer. Sun protection can come in many different forms and strengths. They are measured by the SPF or Sun Protection Factor and the higher the number, the better the protection from harmful light rays. The protectants can range anywhere from 2-100 and each number works for a different person’s skin type based on sensitivity. There are many different forms of sunscreen like lotion, gel, balm, or spray. Most common places to get sunburned that are easily missed when applying sunscreen includes the lips, hands, and the neck. These areas are used often in motion so it would definitely be a bummer to end up with a sunburn located there. No matter what form or strength you prefer, it is important that it is applied when exposed to the sun to avoid any other complications.
Staying hydrated is key in the warmer months to help heal sunburns and maintain body temperature. Water is amazing for so many things in our body, including helping the sun burn healing process. With water intake, the body moves it towards the sunburned areas to assist with hydration, leading to a decrease in the severity. The human body undertakes homeostasis which is keeping your internal systems balanced including the nervous system which takes part in controlling internal body temperature. The average temperature of a healthy body is 98.6° and with the warm air taking over, water intake aids in homeostasis, regulating normal temperature. Even without sun exposure, the heat is still effective, which means water is still important. While you are reading this, go ahead and get a glass of water now, it is good for you!
Being cautious is implied all the time but with more activity opportunities, people have to be extra cautious when exploring outside. If riding a bike is up your alley, make sure to strap on a helmet before you go down the trail. Also, stay on bike trails as much as possible and when in town stay well aware of traffic. Minnesota also tends to have a lot of mosquitoes that could possibly carry disease, so apply bug spray when in grassy or wet areas. If you are planning a vacation to this beach at all, check the water and aquatic life conditions before entering the water to avoid any unfortunate encounters with dangerous wildlife like jellyfish or sharks. Make sure the ocean current and riptide are low because they are more powerful than you think. Last but definitely not least, make sure to have fun this summer and cherish the memories you make!
