Janice Marilyn Fuglie Dokken passed from this world on March 20, 2024, while living at Springbrook Village of La Crescent, Minn.
Janice was born in Ulen, Minn., the child of Melvin and Mamie (Hoganson) Fuglie on September 3, 1933. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. Janice attended public school in Ulen, graduating in 1951. She received her B.S. degree from Mayville University, N. Dak., and two M.S. degrees from University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
She was married to Manford Dokken for 25 years, and they had four children: Mark, Paul, Gail and Beth. Manford died in 1976 at 50 years of age.
Manford’s profession (teacher and school administrator) resulted in several moves during their marriage. Wherever they resided, Janice was active in church and community activities. While living in Frazee, Minn., she sang in PTA chorus and the Detroit Lakes Community Choir. Besides singing in the church choir, she also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was also a frequent soloist at weddings and funerals.
It was when they lived in Hunter, N. Dak., that Janice attended college, completing her degree in three years. The move to Buffalo Lake, Minn., followed, and she taught fourth grade in Hector, Minn. In 1972, they moved to Caledonia when Manford became school superintendent and where Janice has resided since.
For the first six years that Janice lived in Caledonia, she taught at the Houston County DAC (now ABLE). In 1978, she began teaching at the Caledonia Elementary School. The last 10 years of her teaching career, she was Director of the High School Media Center. After her retirement in 1995, she was an active member of REAM (Retired Educators.)
While a member of Immanuel Lutheran in Caledonia, Janice has been active in WELCA, Rachel Circle, Altar Guild, church council, church librarian (24 years), church choir, bell choir, teaching Sunday School and released time religion classes. Janice was a correspondent with members of the seventh grade under the CPS program. She served on the Evergreen Cemetery Board for 20 years, and was a member of the Community Education Advisory Board for several years. Janice was a cancer survivor, and for 10 years captained a team to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She also served 10 years on the Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent) advisory board. For several years she sang in the women’s chorus, The Highland Voices, performing in nursing homes and rehab centers throughout the area.
Janice was proud of her Norwegian heritage, and was a member of the Sons of Norway. Many of her friends and family members were recipients of items done in Hardanger embroidery. She traveled to Norway and the Netherlands several times, visiting family and relatives. Janice became an experienced traveler and participated in several Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) programs. She took an interest in biking, and went on many bike tours throughout Europe and in the United States. Janice also enjoyed reading and was a member of Cover to Cover book club. Playing bridge with her friends occupied many an afternoon. Making quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a gesture of love for her family.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Kari Schultz, five brothers: Ole, Raymond, Earl, Harry and Winton Fuglie, a brother-in-law, six sisters-in-law, one niece and two nephews.
Among those who mourn her passing are her four children: Mark (Elizabeth) Dokken of Spring Grove, Paul (Barbara) Dokken of Horten, Norway, Gail (Hal) Yelton of Minocqua, Wis., and Beth (Rob) Henneveld of Tubbergen, Netherlands; 15 grandchildren will miss their beloved grandmother: Sonya (Joshua) Moen, Jack (Beth) Dokken, Adam Schultz, Joseph (Hannah) Dokken, Maria (Dillon) Vosika, Jenna Dokken, Debra (Hans Erik) Hoines, Jennifer (Siegfried) Geise, Paul (Ashleigh) Dokken, Eric Dokken, Michelle Dokken, Luke (Jill) Yelton, Laurel (John) Parins, Eliot (Dianne) Henneveld and Helena Henneveld.
