Ione Barbara Selness, age 88, of Spring Grove, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Gundersen Tweeten Care Center, in Spring Grove, Minn.
She was born on December 29, 1935, in Mabel, Minn., to Orville and Irene (Hesby) Hanson. She was baptized on May 17, 1936, and confirmed on June 11, 1950, at Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel, Minn. She graduated from Mabel High School in 1953.
On August 31, 1953, Ione married Grant Selness at Scheie Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Riceford, Minn., and later built a house in Spring Grove. They maintained the Spring Grove cemetery and the Trinity Center for many years. She and Grant ran “This and That” thrift shop, first from their home and later on main street. They enjoyed going to flea markets and auctions. Grant preceded Ione in death on August 13, 2009.
Ione was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its women’s groups. She enjoyed visiting with friends, and especially following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities. Ione had a very good memory for details and past dates.
She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (Mike) Wiste of Spring Grove, and Joyce (Mark) Knutson of Caledonia, Minn.; her grandchildren Sarah (Anthony) Schmidt and their children Carter and Ella of La Crescent, Minn., Erin (Devin) Becker of Spring Grove and their children Caroline, Natalie and Simon, Joshua (Autumn) Wiste and their children Wyatt, Dexter and Lucas, Karla Hansen and her children Morgan and Timothy, and Nicholas Wiste, all of Spring Grove, Brandon (Michelle) Knutson and their children Kolton, Kinlee and Kaden, Brent (Erica) Knutson and their children Liberty, Bronco and baby Knutson, Blake Knutson, Blaine Knutson and Bronson Knutson; her brothers Alan (Becky) Hanson of Rushford, Minn., and Dale (Carol) Hanson of St. Charles, Minn.
In addition to her parents and her husband Grant, she was preceded in death by her siblings Ordell (Edna) Hanson, Joan (Hank) Cheney, Norma (Willard) Johnson, Curtiss (Marcella) Hanson and Dennis Hanson.
Funeral services for Ione will be held Saturday, July 6 at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Lane Zaffke will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the church.
