Grove girls Shackle Schaeffer, Houston

Spring Grove volleyball improved to 6-3 with a second 3-0 sweep of 0-7 winless Schaeffer Academy (25-7, 25-13, 25-20) and a far more competitive 3-1 victory over Houston (25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17). For the week, Maggie Lile served 32-for-34 with 9 aces.

SG 3, Schaeffer Academy 0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-20,)

            In this fifth straight win over the Lions from Rochester, a dozen Lions from Houston County had kills and seven had assists as Spring Grove employed the entire lineup. SG had 28 kills and served more aces (17) than Schaeffer had kills (13) and aces (3) combined.

Schaeffer was not competitive on the scoreboard until the third set. SA led 19-17 before Spring Grove closed with a 7-to-1 run, which featured 3 aces served by Julia Halverson.

For the night, Halverson served 6 times with 3 aces (no errors). Danika Holty served 100% (17 for 17) with 4 aces while Emma Tyribakken went 10 for 10 with 2 aces.

Kelsey Bratland and Addyson McHugh each scored with 4 kills. Rachel Normann lofted 8 assists with 6 helpers each from Paige Jahnke and Ava Olerud.

Schaeffer has no B-team or freshman squad.

SG 3, Houston 1 (25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17)

Visiting Houston took the only set in which the Hurricanes had more winning points (15) than errors (8). Overall, the Lions earned a 44-30 margin in kills and served twice as many aces (14) as did the ‘Canes (7 aces/14 errors). SG hit with 16% efficiency to Houston’s 9%.

The Lions dominated set one while McHugh served 3 aces and pounded down 6 kills. But Grove trailed 16-17 in set two before Houston misfires fueled a closing 8-2 Lion run.

But then the ‘Canes excelled with 10 kills and only two errors during a 25-23 win in set three, which was tied 13 times. It was 23-all before it ended with a Lion hitting error and a Houston ace serve.

For the match, McHugh led the Lions with 19 kills, an ace block and 5 ace serves. Halverson (team-high 28% hitting efficiency) added 6 kills and served 100% (18-18) with 3 aces. Lile served 4 aces along with 3 kills and 6 assists while defending with a team-high 19 digs. Normann assisted 30 times and added 3 kills of her own.

For Houston (2-7), Emma Geiwitz scored with 10 kills and Sydney Torgerson 9.

The Lions also won the B-team match 2-0 (25-11, 25-22) and the freshman contest 2-0. The B-girls improved to 5-2, and the freshmen moved to 3-1-1.
