It was the Spring Grove girls’ second runaway win in as many matches against overmatched competition as the Lions overwhelmed Lyle/Pacelli 3-0 (25-2, 25-8, 25-14) on Aug. 31 at Lyle.

Overall, the Lions outscored L/P 75-24 with the Athletics scoring only 10 points on their own play while receiving 14 points from Spring Grove errors. The Lions were considerably more efficient with more than four times as many scoring plays as errors. There was no drama from the outset with the Lions scoring the first 10 points. The two teams played 34 points before the first Lyle/Pacelli kill. The 25-2 first set result was the fewest points allowed in a 25-point set by Spring Grove in nine years, since a 25-2 set against Schaeffer Academy in 2012.

Lion hitter Addyson McHugh had a match-high eight kills, the same number as the L/P team. With a strong 36% team hitting efficiency, 10 different Grove girls contributed to 28 total kills with only seven misfires. There were no lengthy rallies with Spring Grove scoring 19 instant points with ace serves. Eight different Lions served instant winners, led by Lydia Solum with 5 aces plus four each served by McHugh and Sydney Holland.

Spring Grove improved to 2-0 (2-0 SEC), while the Athletics (0-3, 0-3 SEC) have not yet taken a set in three matches. Although this match was not competitive, the series has been close with 14 wins for Spring Grove and 12 for Lyle/Pacelli.
