Other business in brief
•Mayor Russ Smith announced that he was not running for reelection. He has served the city for 20 years. Smith said he has learned a lot by serving on the city council and as mayor; it is very rewarding and a good way to serve your community. For those who want to serve on the city council, there are two city council positions and the mayor position up for election this year.
•Owen Dammen explained plans for his Eagle Scout project. He wants to build a “9-square in the air” facility in a Chatfield park. It is a game that combines volleyball with 9-square on the ground. The facility is to be 18 feet by 18 feet. He asked for permission to construct the facility. Approval was given to construct the facility in a sand area in one of the existing volleyball courts in Mill Creek Park.
•Brian Burkholder reminded the city council that late last year the council approved the purchase with trade of a John Deere front mount mower. SEMA has been unable to locate one of these mowers. Burkholder suggested purchasing a John Deere tractor instead. The tractor can be more versatile; it can be used for mowing, thatching in parks and ballfields, along with dragging ballfields and spraying. Preston Equipment Company submitted a quote for a John Deere x758 tractor, mower deck, and rotary tiller. The total cost with trade (of a 2018 John Deere mower) is $10,400. The purchase was approved as presented.
•Burkholder reported quotes had been received to sealcoat the walking paths in Groen Park, Mill Creek Park, and the skate park. Last year the paths were crack filled. The low quote from Four Seasons in the amount of $14,946 was approved as recommended. Four Season Asphalt Maintenance applies two coats of asphalt emulsion sealcoat.
•The city council will meet next on August 22.
