The Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston soccer girls (1-2, 1-2 TRC) came up short in both games last week, a decisive 12-0 loss at state, top-10-ranked Winona Cotter on Sept. 7 and then two days later at home, a slim 2-1 decision against Dover-Eyota.

Cotter 12, C/SG/H 0
“They (the Ramblers) were one of the best teams last year, and I didn’t know how they could get any better – but they did,” said Warrior coach Chris Jandt. “Cotter is very good in front of the goal and work very well with one-touch passing.”

He noted the Warrior defense did force Cotter into some difficult shots, but the shots came early and often. Josie Foster, in goal for C/SG/H, saved 22 of 34 Cotter shots. “Josie really got tested from them,” added Jandt. “Josie played a clean game, and none of the goals came from any of her errors. We couldn’t had asked for a better game from her.”

The Ramblers scored five goals before halftime and then hit the net again just 20 seconds into the second half. Cotter was effective on defense as well, not allowing any Warrior shots.

D-E 2, C/SG/H 1
The Warriors took an early lead when, in the 17th minute, Ayshia Gay maneuvered past the D-E defense to score from 20 yards out after collecting a pass from Hailey Alfson. The C/SG/H defense held for the next 10 minutes before an Eagle forward was able to break through and slid an open shot past Foster.
Shortly before halftime, Dover-Eyota was awarded a penalty kick, but Foster made an outstanding save to keep the score tied at the break. Foster saved 15 of 17 Eagle shots, while the Warriors were limited to only three shots on goal.
