Garage Sales

By Pastor Marke Geselle

Valley Christian Center

“As I walked into our church today, I walked into a maze of STUFF!  You name it and it was probably in our foyer and fellowship hall.  The ladies are preparing for a church garage sale to help provide ministry funds to use for our church’s women’s retreat at the end of the month and for other ministry endeavors.  Stuff here, stuff there, stuff all over the place.  One person’s junk is another person’s treasure, as the old saying goes.  It’s quite true.  Stuff we think we need.  Stuff we just got to have.  Stuff we can’t live without.  And where does it end up?  Maybe a church garage sale.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also….”  In other words what you value, will determine where your heart is and what you’ll run after.  What you value most reveals the desires of your heart.  What we spend our time, talents and resources trying to attain or achieve, shows the reality of what we think is important to pursue in our lives.

Riches? Popularity? Position? Possessions?  A set of old golf clubs? Books galore?  Old football cleats? Snow skis?  Longaberger baskets and Precious Moments figurines?  All things we just had to have!  “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Jesus

We store up “treasure in heaven” when we make choices on earth that benefit God’s kingdom.  Those are the only things that will last.  Garage sale stuff or treasures in heaven?  There’s quite a distinction!  The question is, what treasures are we running after?  Whatever they are, or whatever it is, reveals what’s in our heart.  A little something to think about this garage sale season.  And if you can’t find it at a garage sale, there’s always Savers or Goodwill.  But needing something of eternal value, you’ll find it in Jesus!
