The Fillmore County Relay for Life, held on July 12 in Spring Valley, Minn., was a resounding success, with 13 teams raising over $67,000 so far in 2024. Despite unforeseen challenges, including downtown flooding just days before the event, organizers Brenda Stier and Rita Bezdicek (above right) worked tirelessly to ensure the event went on as planned, salvaging essential items for the luminaria walk.
The day was marked by inspiring moments,
including guest speakers who shared their personal victories
over cancer at both the afternoon survivor tea and evening dinner. The popular silent auction featured generous donations from local businesses, including services, gift cards and products, contributing to the event’s success.
A highlight of the evening was the “heads & tails” game, where Drury Furniture of Fountain, Minn., once again donated a leather recliner chair as the prize, adding to the fun and excitement.
Earlier in the day, the Spring Valley basketball team helped set up luminary bags in Spring Creek Park, preparing for the moving memorial walk at dusk. Attendees participated in a silent walk among the luminaries, taking time to remember and honor those who have battled cancer, both survivors and those who have passed.
Spring Valley City Council members helped set up, serve, and clean up after the dinner. Rick Jeddeloh, who played a key role in organizing this year’s event alongside Brenda and Rita, expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated. “Every dollar makes a difference,” Rick said. “No donation is too small. Donations help fund groundbreaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities. You are helping the American Cancer Society even before anyone sets foot on the relay track.”
Plans are already underway for the 2025 Relay for Life, which will again be held in Spring Valley, Minn. Those interested in participating or volunteering can contact Brenda Stier through the event’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/relayforlifespringvalleymn/.
