At the June 24 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad issued sincere thanks to the Preston, Fountain and Harmony banks for continuing to support the school through mini grants; $10,500 has been awarded this year. The spring sports season has finished. The Summer Strength and Agility program is going well with over 100 students registered.
Summer Rec started on June 9 and is going well. Multiple positions are available in the child care center.
Olivia Spitzer was hired as the ninth grade volleyball coach and Abbey Hellickson as the volunteer volleyball coach. A resignation from John Mease was accepted. Tenure was approved for teachers Ty Sloan, Karlee Spande, Logan Walker, Samantha Russell, and Jennifier Lindstrom. The van driver wages were approved with no increase from last year. The substitute teacher pay, number of days as a sub before being placed on a salary schedule, substitute secretary pay, substitute para pay, and substitute custodial pay were all approved with no changes. A special education service contract with Southern Minnesota Education Consortium, or SMEC, was approved as well as a contract for vision impairment, and another for deaf/hard of hearing services. “Micki Breitsprecher does a great job working with area schools, consortiums, etc., to get the hours we need,” Superintendent Olstad said. “I just want to thank her for that.”
The board passed a resolution approving a new referendum revenue authorization and calling for a special election. Community meetings will be held to discuss the referendum.
The school’s policy is to close student activity accounts if there were no transactions during the previous school year. The dance team season was canceled last year due to an insufficient number of participants, so the board approved a motion to close the account, with the understanding that if there is interest from students, it can be reinstated.
The board reviewed the operating budget for the upcoming school year. The budget was based on an estimated enrollment number of 549 students, but it was noted that that can still change. Darla Ebner also said that since legislation is still changing, it is difficult to finalize the budget. The food service fund is above what the state allows so that will be spent down by purchasing new equipment for the kitchens and new food trays for the elementary school.
The first reading of the K-6, 7-12, Faculty, Paraprofessionals, and Mentoring Coaches handbooks, as well as the restrictive procedures plan was approved. There were few revisions this year, most of which were in the high school handbook. High school students will now be required to complete a chemistry course before graduation. Honors or Highest Honors for graduation will be awarded based only on cumulative GPA with no class requirements going forward.
The admission fees and sports season pass costs were approved at the same rate as last year. Superintendent Olstad was designated as the district representative for federal programs. A contract with Edmentum for online courses for ALP credit recovery was renewed as were the district’s memberships in the Minnesota School Board Assocation, the Minnesota Rural Education Association, and the Southeast Service Cooperative. A quote from First Dakota Indemnity for worker’s compensation was approved at a 6.3% increase from last year.
A quote from WHV to install air conditioning in the elementary stage gym was approved as was a quote from La Crosse Glass to replace three doors at the high school.
The Vendor Negotiation Committee has met with Harmony Transit and are working out a few last details for the contract. It should be ready for approval at the July meeting.
