At the February 27 Fillmore Central school board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad reported that I Love to Read Month is wrapping up. The students experienced fun events and programs, dress up days and more to celebrate over the month of February. Thanks were extended to the Preston Fire Department for their donation that will allow each student to receive a free book at the end of the month.
The Math Wizards attended a meet on February 8. Fifth grade students Liam Ringer and Eliza Aggen both placed well in the individual and group rounds. The winter tournaments are well underway. One Act Play was able to go all the way to state with their performance this year. The boys basketball sections begin on February 29. Girls basketball made it to the Mayo Civic Center before their season ended. Kane Larson is going on to state in wrestling. The spring sports season is gearing up to start on March 11.
Parent/Teacher Conferences at both the elementary and high school will be held on March 7. Olstad noted that he doesn’t feel that they are always necessary as the communication between staff and families is so phenomenal, allowing for issues to be addressed as they rise, rather than waiting until the next conference.
The boiler system at the high school was replaced on February 26 after being out of order for some time.
The spring coaches were approved. Josh Jones, Doc Schoepski and Jake Ihrke will coach baseball; Aaron Mensink, Andy Todd, Brad Holten and Ty Sloan will coach golf; and Samantha Bratland and Hannah Terry will coach softball.
Resignations were accepted from 3/4 preschool teacher Tara Corson, Preschool/SAC aide Felicity Lewandowski, and English teacher Tracy Knutson. James Ryan was hired as the long-term sub for the 7-12th grade band, Anna Lane as the high school science teacher, and Delaney Yoder and Brooklyn Simon as SAC aides.
A transfer of $1,129.80 from the Lunch/Milk Assistance fund to the Milk Break Revenue account was approved for milk break assistance for families who need it.
The master agreement contract with Education Minnesota-Fillmore Central was approved for 2023-2025.
The 2024-2025 school calendar was reviewed and approved as recommended by the calendar committee. Superintendent Olstad said that due to newly mandated state legislation called the Read Act, additional staff development days may need to be added in later as more information is obtained on who will need to be trained and how. He noted that that won’t be a problem as Fillmore Central is quite a bit above the required hours of education.
An open enrollment request was approved.
It was noted that the March 26 board meeting falls on the same evening as the 9-12 band and choir recital. A motion to move the meeting from 6:30 pm to 6 p.m. to accommodate the event was approved. The meeting will be held at the high school.
