At October 27 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad updated the board on the fall sports season. Both the football and volleyball teams received the #1 seed and won their first rounds in playoffs. Winter sports will be starting soon. Forty-four students are signed up for boys basketball, 33 for girls basketball, and 35 total for wrestling. Athletic Director Chris Mensink applied for and received permission to create a girls wrestling team with the nine girls who signed up this year.
Parent/teacher conferences were held on October 13. The elementary conferences were well attended. The high school conferences are still being held virtually, but requests for in-person conferences are always honored. A rock climbing wall was recently installed in the small gym at the elementary school. The first few monthly game nights at the elementary were well attended with 40-60 students attending.
The FFA National Convention is taking place this week with a number of students attending. Three doors at the high school building are being redone.
The preschool team has been working on integrating the Smart Start/Boosts Up program into the preschool classes. Recently, a few grants have been received that have enabled some items to be purchased for the classrooms. A trip is being planned for the preschoolers to visit the Preston Public Library’s storywalk at the city park. The SAC students are working on their drawings to submit to the Young Artists’ Perfect Pet drawing contest. ECFE held Creatures of the Night on October 23 and will be participating in Trunk or Treat in Preston on October 31 and hosting a Literacy Night at the Harmony Public Library on November 20. Several positions are available at the child care center and SAC.
The board met with Superintendent Olstad in August to create a long-range facility plan and set goals using specific evaluation tools.
Andy Todd, Will Nolan, Quincy Burland, Josh Krage and Logan Corson were hired as the boys basketball coaches, and Levi Olstad, Jason Schwarz, Pat Severson, Chad Finseth and Kerry Rindels as the girls basketball coaches. Blaise Sass, Phil LaFleur, Joe Cullen, Joel Pfeffer, Erik Bengston, William Ferrie, Holly Knutson, Caleb Prigge,and Walker Ward were hired as the wrestling coaches, and Kelsey Biel as the head softball coach. Jackie Whitacre was approved for One Act Play and Speech.
Mateo Acosta and Rave Crocker were hired as custodians, Amelia Neuzil as a SPED para, Sophia Kingsley as an enrichment aide. Resignations were accepted from custodians Mateo Acosta and Jerad Soppa, SPED para Angelia Evers, and One Block at a Time employees Sashia Sharpton and Aaron Kruckenberg.
The quarterly donations in the amount of $28,195.41 were accepted with gratitude from the board.
The board discussed a potential date and time to canvass the election results which must be completed before November 14. They decided on November 11 at 7 a.m. in the Harmony meeting room.
MSHSL Resolution A to offset student activity fees was approved.
