At the March 26 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad gave the reports for the elementary and high schools. Parent/teacher conferences took place on March 7. The winter sports and activities season has wrapped up. Congratulations were extended to Katie Whelan for placing 4th in the state individual wrestling tournament, Kane Larson for placing 5th, and Vivienne Hoeltzle for placing 6th. The spring sports season of speech, baseball and softball have started. At the high school, 27 juniors took the ACTs. The large group band and choir competition took place at the high school with both the Fillmore Central band and choir receiving superior ratings.
Austin Bahler, Nicholas Mensink, Andy Johnson, Cooper Ferrie and Peyton Olson were approved as the volunteer baseball coaches. Jackie Whitacre was approved as the director of the spring musical and Matthew Patterson as the musical director. Sonia Bockoven was hired as the ¾ preschool teacher for the 2024/2025 school year and Deb Ebner as the ¾ aide. Ashley Grabau was hired as a lead teacher for the daycare. Resignations were accepted from boys basketball coach Brady O’Connor and elementary teacher Abigail Palkowski.
The board reviewed the services and fees from Region V Computer Services which takes care of the software and support for the district’s accounting and personnel management. The fees were approved.
The proposed dates for the Extended School Year program or ESY for both the elementary and high school special educations students are August 5-9 and 12-16. The students will be on site from 8-11 a.m. each morning during those dates. They can also receive up to 15 sessions of one-to-one services during the months of June, July, August. The teacher and paraprofessional needs will be decided when the list of participating students has been finalized. The board approved the proposed dates. The Elementary Summer Program was also approved and will have sessions in June and August.
The 2023/2024 seniority list had been reviewed by the teachers. The board approved the list. Board members Craig Britton, Sue Sikkink and Aaron Bishop were appointed to the referendum committee.
Several open enrollment requests were approved.
The board approved a transfer of $650 from the Angel Fund to the Elementary Supply Fee Revenue account to cover the elementary supply fees for a number of families in need of assistance.
Superintendent Olstad noted that he is currently looking into options for dehumidifying and air conditioning the stage and older portion of the high school. Doing so would improve the quality of the classrooms there. He will be putting together quotes to see about tackling the project piece by piece. He also said that the high school gym floor will need to be refinished this summer as the finish comes up whenever tape is removed, even though the only tape used on it is the kind that is rated for gym floors.
The next Fillmore Central school board meeting will be held on April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary school meeting room.
