The Fillmore Central School Board met virtually at 7 a.m. on February 22 due to icy road conditions. Two bids from Niagara Builders were reviewed. One bid was to build a dugout and adjoining storage shed for the junior high baseball field. The vocational class had constructed a small storage shed at that location around five to seven years ago, but unfortunately, it was destroyed in the December 15, 2021, storm. The other bid was for repairs to the soffit and fascia on the concession stand at the football field. The concession stand was just built a few years ago, but the soffit was not reinforced properly and so it was vulnerable to the high winds during the storm. The repairs have been turned into the district’s insurance company and most of the costs should be covered. The board approved the bids.
I Love to Read month is wrapping up at the elementary school. The Math Wizards had their final meet in Chatfield on February 7. Tournaments for winter sports are starting. One Act Play took first at sub-sections and first place at sections.
Shelby Ebner, Doc Schoepski, Andy Todd, and Ty Sloan were hired as coaches for the spring sports season. Abbigail Dahley was hired as an aide for One Block at a Time.
The board reviewed a quote from AIM Electronics for two shot clocks. One will be put in the main gym at the high school and the other in the main gym at the elementary building. The additional clocks are mandated by the Minnesota State High School League and are required to be operable by the 2022-2023 sports season at the latest. “We’re being proactive instead of waiting,” Superintendent Heath Olstad said. The board approved the first option in the quote.
The 2022-2023 contract with Frontline Education was renewed. Frontline Education is the company that supplies the school district with substitute teachers and support staff.
The calendar committee, which is made up of a staff members from the elementary and high school, board member Jennifer Pickett, Principal Jim Peters, and Heath Olstad, submitted the 2022-2023 school calendar to the board. “We had a very good discussion,” Olstad commented. “I think it’s a very solid calendar.” He noted that one change to the calendar is that students will have both Thursday and Friday of MEA off from school instead of the half day of school on Thursday that they had been doing. The board approved the calendar.
The food service contract is required to be bid out every five years and is coming due. “Fillmore Central is satisfied with Taher, but we have to follow the proper procedures,” Olstad said.
The total estimated cost for the elementary roof project will be around $620,000.
The next Fillmore Central School Board meeting will be held on March 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.
