At the August 27 Fillmore Central school board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad reported that a good number of students are participating in the fall sports season which is already underway. Nineteen students are signed up for cross country, 11 for cheerleading, 61 for football, and 38 for volleyball. The football field has been freshly painted and is ready for the first game on August 30. The Tackle Cancer game will take place on September 13. Proceeds from the game will be donated to Amy Timmerman, Jill Miller and the Randy Shaver Cancer Research & Community Fund.
The floor at the high school big gym has been refinished and repainted and is looking great. The booster club has received and accepted many donations. “The most heartfelt thank you to all the parents, families, and community members for their support for Fillmore Central,” Olstad said. The summer school program was successful. The back-to-school conferences for the elementary school will take place on September 3 and 4. The open house for the high school students will take place on August 28. Olstad noted that technology director Aaron Janssen does an excellent job of making sure all of the computers are ready for students and teachers each year.
Early childhood screening was recently held at the elementary school. Preschool will begin the week of September 8. Several new employees have been hired for One Block at a Time and SAC, but there are still positions available.
Resignations were accepted from eighth grade volleyball coach Hope Sexton, SPED paras Kathy Stafki, Sherry Barr, Randy Stafki, and Naomi Walsh.
Jade Nelson was hired as an aide for One Block at a Time, Hope Sexton as the JV volleyball coach, Sarah Hutchison as the high school art teacher, Aaron Mensink as the Jr. High Knowledge Bowl advisor, Maddie Topness as a SAC aide, Connie Lindstrom as a .6 FTE elementary teacher, and Alysa Rink as a long-term substitute at the elementary school. Amanda Jensen, Pam Flattum, Grace Schwichtenberg, Ciera Klein and Cassidy Canterbury were all hired as SPED paras. The recommended hours for the non-certified staff members for the 2024-25 school year were approved. Superintendent Olstad noted that the district is currently fully staffed.
The district’s current fixed asset threshold is set at $5,000 which is for a single unit. The business office asked the board to consider adding a threshold of $50,000 for combined units such as multiple laptops. A recent GASB change requires the school to include combined units in its fixed asset processing. The board approved the change.
Twelve requests for graduate credit reimbursements were received and approved as well as seven requests requests for salary schedule lane changes.
The district’s annual PSEO contract with RCTC was reviewed and approved.
Referendum informational community meetings will be held in September and October.
