Evelyn (Genny) Genevieve Laine, age 95 of Spring Grove, passed away on May 19, 2026, at Spring Grove Assisted Living.
She was born to Arthur and Gladys (Vick) Qualey on September 14, 1930, in Spring Grove. She attended rural school in Wilmington Township and enjoyed riding her horse to school.
On October 30, 1948, she married Verne Laine. The couple moved to Duluth for Verne’s work. During their time in Duluth, the couple were blessed with two sons, Verne Jr. and Ernest. Later Verne was transferred back to southeastern Minnesota, and the couple returned to Spring Grove. Joining the family after moving back to Spring Grove were their son and daughter Richard and Rose.
Evelyn enjoyed playing bingo and cards, fishing trips, going to the casino, and the Minnesota Twins. She worked for Winona Industries, driving herself and later, her son to Winona, so he could earn his degree from Winona Technical College.
She volunteered for Semcac and worked for Mansfield Industries and Northern Engraving, in Spring Grove. Evelyn enjoyed babysitting for the Corpstein children, and for her daughter Rose’s children. She loved spending time with her family.
After her husband Verne passed away on December 2, 1986, Evelyn went back to work for a short time at Northern Engraving in Spring Grove.
Evelyn was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, and its women’s groups.
Survivors include her sons Verne Jr. (Mary) of Wenatchee, Wash., Ernest (Linda) of Decorah, Iowa, and Richard (Rosemary) of Burr Oak, Iowa, and her daughter Rose (Trygve) Tilleraas of La Belle, Fla., her grandchildren Dan, Michael, Kathleen, Adam, Dale, Heather, Jared and Emily; and her great-grandchildren Haley, Olivya, Tiandra, Grayson, Michael, Carmen, DeAndre, Tanner, Hailey, Aleah, Kassie, Jamison and Bennett; her brother Arnold (Leslie) Qualey of Fargo, N. Dak., and her sister-in-law Harriet Qualey of Decorah, Iowa.
In addition to her parents and husband Verne, she was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren in infancy, Colton and Ripley; and her brothers Norvin Qualey and Donald Qualey.
Funeral services will be held on Sat. May 30, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Pastor Mark Abelson will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to SEMCAC senior dining.
