Eight runs not nearly enough for Lions in Legion loss at Lewiston

June 22, 2021 by Lee Epps

Eight runs had been enough for the Spring Grove American Legion boys in the 8-4 summer season-opening win against Lanesboro, but eight was far from sufficient in a deflating 29-8 runaway loss at Lewiston on June 14. A June 20 encounter with Mabel was rained out. The Lion Legion lineup is mostly the same as in the just-completed school season.

There was plenty of Lion charity, but mostly from the position players. The Spring Grove pitchers walked only five batters and hit one while striking out three. Lion hurlers put the ball over the plate, and Lewiston bats put the ball in play resulting in 22 base hits. And Lewiston batters reached base nine times on errors; the Lions had 11 errors overall. Each team had four earned runs, which means the Swarm had 25 unearned runs due to Spring Grove fielding miscues.

The Lions managed only five hits during the run-rule-shortened, five-inning game. Each team had a pair of doubles with Ty Cleven (1 for 1) and Caleb Griffin (1 for 2) belting two-baggers for Spring Grove. Every Swarm batter had at least one base hit and an RBI. Lead-off batter Caleb Mueller scored six runs and drove in four while batting 4 for 5. Tommy Lee went 4 for 6.

The Swarm, batting around the order in each of the four innings they came to the plate, scored in each inning, including 11 runs in the second frame and 10 in the fourth. Lion batters had no big innings, but they scored twice in every inning except the first. There was little charity as a pair of Lewiston pitchers combined to walk only four and hit one batter. Three Lions reached base on errors.
