During the October 9, 2024, city council meeting, Mayor Adam Wilder presented Public Works employee Chuck Dahl with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his 25 years of service to the city of Mabel. The city council thanked Dahl for his dedication, loyalty, and commitment.

Mayor Adam Wilder called the meeting of the Mabel City Council to order at 6 p.m.

In addition to Mayor Wilder, council members Cory Wilson, Valerie Arnold, Tina Bakke and Kirsten Wyffels were present. Also present were City Clerk Karen Larson and Chuck Dahl.

Larson had little to report regarding the lightning strike at the EMS building. She informed the council, “Insurance does not cover new items. If it wasn’t existing, they don’t cover it.” The adjuster did not include the radios and equipment because they are covered by Ancom. She added that it is an ongoing process, and she will keep the council updated as she learns more.

A decision on the fire department training pay was tabled until Mayor Wilder spoke with the fire department. Larson noted that she would like input from the department and that there is plenty of time to bring the matter before the council because it wouldn’t go into effect until January 1, 2025.

The joint board meeting with the M-C School Board and the Canton City Council will take place on December 4 at 6 p.m. in the school’s science room. Valeria Arnold, Cory Wilson and Karen Larson will attend.

The council was reminded that alternate side parking begins November 1,  and the last day of compost pickup is October 28. Notices have been placed in the newsletter, and Larson will publish the notices.

The library applied for an Operation Roundup grant from MiEnergy to upgrade its public computer technology. The library was awarded $1000.

The board unanimously appointed the following 2024 election judges: Kendra Spalla and Dee Ann Erickson as head election judges, and Sandra Christoper, Linda Turner and Myrna Wilson as regular election judges for the 2024 statewide general election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. According to the resolution, head election judges will receive $13 per hour, except for Kendra Spalla, who will receive her hourly rate of pay, while regular election judges will receive $11 per hour during election judge training and for time served on election day.

Wyffels reported that all EDA loans are current. She announced that “El Dorado is open and has their liquor license, thanks to Karen’s persistence.”

On behalf of Public Works Director Bob Mierau who was absent, Larson reported that the hydrants will be flushed from October 28 through November 1. She also added that Mierau and Dahl replaced the lights in the community center kitchen with  LED lights, noting that the kitchen is now very bright.

In other business, the council:

  • Unanimously approved the minutes from the September 11 regularly scheduled meeting
  • Approved the accounts payable and financial reports and paid the bills totaling $77,689.17. Larson noted that there was “nothing really out of the ordinary.”
  • Unanimously adjourned at 6:17 p.m.
