Charles Sparks

Candidate for Preston City Council

1. Tell us about yourself.

I am a retired teacher from the Fillmore Central Schools. I have lived and/or worked in Preston since 1968. My wife Ann and I have owned our Preston home for 35 years. We have three children who grew up in Preston and graduated from Fillmore Central Schools.

2. Why are you running for office?

I have been on the city council for 12 years. With the recent changes of our council members and a new city administrator, I would like to remain on the city council to have continuity. It is important to look at both sides of the issues. I am on or have been on various boards including Park, Library, Tourism, PPU, EDA, past president of SELCO, and treasurer of Preston Historical Society. I believe by serving on the council that it is my way to give back to the community.

3. What do you hope to accomplish if you get elected?

Since I have been of the city council, we now have the veterans cemetery, two major street projects, and veterans home plus many more small projects. Decisions need to be carefully weighed with finances available. It is important to have good city services including fire, ambulance, police, street maintenance, library, swimming pool and parks. We need to keep businesses and attract new ones, grow our tourism, and have sufficient housing. Preston needs to remain a safe rural community to live in and raise your family. If elected, I will work to maintain and improve these goals.
