Bjerke, Pieper pace C/SG boys to runner-up finish at first track meet

Junior Reid Bjerke won the 100-meter dash, ran second at 200 meters and was part of the second-place 4×100-meter relay foursome for the Caledonia/Spring Grove track and field boys, who finished as the team runner-up at the five-team GMLOKS track meet on April 16 at Grand Meadow. Chris Pieper had a personal-record 6-foot, 2-inch high jump to win that event while junior Logan Banse had the meet’s best discus distance (130-04) and the second best shot put (43-04). Fisher Wait won four events at an April 12 junior high meet at Lewiston-Altura.

With only six girls making the trip, the Warriors could not make a serious challenge in the team standings (fifth out of five). Host Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/ Kingsland/Southland won both team championships.

Boys: GMLOKS 146, C/SG 64, Cotter 51, Dover-Eyota 35, Lyle/Pacelli 18

Girls: GMLOKS 175.5, Cotter 100.5, D-E 34, L/P 19. C/SG 16

Boys

            In the 100-meter dash, five Warrior boys finished among the top six. Bjerke (12.17 seconds) won it with Hunter Holland third, Eric Mauss fourth, Pieper fifth and Banse sixth. Joining Bjerke on the runner-up 4×100 team were Banse, senior Mitchell Reynolds and freshman Josh Beardmore. A second C/SG squad was fourth in that speed relay, run by Pieper, Holland, sophomore Eric Mauss and freshman Jason Schock.

In addition to the second-place relay run, Reynolds was second in triple jump (34-08) and ran a leg on the third place 4x200M relay along with Holland, Beardmore, Schock and freshman Lewis Doyle. The top six places in each event earned team points, including sophomore Bronson Knutson (4th shot put), Blake Morrow (5th shot put, 5th discus), Pieper (6th long jump),

Girls

            Senior Eliza Welscher ran third in the 100-meter dash and senior Alexis Schroeder was fourth in both that sprint and the 200-meter dash, They both ran on the second-place 4x200M relay along with sophomore Alexis Schuldt and senior Stevie Bulman. Freshman Campbell Cognac came in fourth in the 800M run. The girls scored team points in four of the six events they entered.

Junior high

            For the boys, Wait won the 100M, 200M and 400M events and also the long jump at the four-team junior high meet. The Warrior boys ran second in the 4x100M relay with legs run by Zeke Gengler, Maddox Walker, Aiden Burns and James Fitzpatrick. Braxton Lange ran third at 800 meters while Fitzpatrick was third in the 100M sprint. Competition came from Cotter, Rushford-Peterson/Houston and host Lewiston-Altura.

For the girls, Aften Myhre placed third in both the 100M and 200M sprints and ran on the fourth-place 4×100 team with Sarah Babinski, Ruby Engeldinger and Livia Rask. The meet was not scored for team totals.
