In a week of personal accomplishments, L-O’s Benita Nolt, FC’s Kammry Broadwater, and GM’s Lauren Queens-land surpassed 1,000 career points. Jayce Kiehne also set the FC boys all-time scoring mark.
Falcon Girls’ Win Streak Includes 1,000-Point Scorers Broadwater and Queensland
Fillmore Central’s girls continued their winning ways. The Falcons first took out Wabasha-Kellogg 65-33. Kyla Hellickson (18 pts, 8-11 FGs, 7 rebs, 6 asts) and Kammry Broadwater (15 pts, 7-8 FGs, 8 rebs, 6 stls) had big games. Jersey Ristau chipped in 8 points. Levi Olstad’s group (4-5, 10-7) then played the first of three straight notable non-conference games, at Kingsland (5-3, 9-4).
The Knights took a 17-16 lead on a Ryley Guy three later in the first half. It would be their last lead. FC finished the stanza on a 10-3 run. Amidst that, the senior G/F Broadwater, a fifth-year player and the third of three good basketball-playing sisters (Kenzie, Kassidy), banked in a three to attain 1,000 career points. She is the only sister to do so (middle sis Kassidy helped take the Falcons to state in 2020). FC went to half up 26-20, then built the lead as high as 39-24. Kingsland got as close 48-43 courtesy of two Macy Runck threes (2:44). But FC posted a 53-46 win. Broadwater (21 pts, 10 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls, 3 blks) had a big night. Haley O’Connor (11 pts, 3-5 threes) also hit double figures. Ristau chipped in 8 points. Guy (9 pts), Katelyn Hauser (8 pts, 4 asts), and Chantle Reiland (6 pts, 4 asts, 5 stls) led the Knights. FC hit 12 two-point shots to Kingsland’s seven. FC was 11 of 24 (46%) from the line, Kingsland 14 of 26 (54%). The Falcons (4-5, 11-7) then trekked to Grand Meadow (7-4, 11-6) for another notable battle. FC entered on a seven-game win streak, GM winning six of seven. The Larks hit seven early threes to stoke a 23-15 lead. But FC’s then hit the next five threes. They made seven of their final eight shots of the half. Ending on a 21-7 run, FC led 36-30 at intermission. The Larks then ripped a 15-4 spurt early in the second half to lead 45-40.
Amidst it, 5’10” junior F/G Lauren Queensland authored a rebound put-back basket for her 1,000th career point. Also, the third of three good basketball-playing sisters (Rylee, Kendyl), eldest sis Rylee scored 1,738 points. But the Larks then went through a scoring draught; one basket in 12-possessions. FC built a 60-51 lead. Annika Mensink then had a key three and Broadwater a key coast-to-coast score, as the Falcons prevailed 65-55 final. Broadwater (26 pts, 10-19 FGs, 9 rebs, 6 stls) proved the best on a night of three 1,000-point scorers in action. Alyssa Britton (10 pts, 7 rebs) and Mensink (9 pts, 3-5 threes, 6 rebs) helped. Aubrey Daniels had 8 assists. Lark 1,000-point gals Lexy Foster (19 pts, 8-11 FTs, 8 rebs) and Queensland (18 pts, 4-5 FTs, 8 rebs) led their effort. Aspen Kolling added 10 points. FC won turnovers 9 to 18. They thus took more shots, 26 of 62 (42%) to GM’s 17 of 49 (35%). They made 19 two-pointers to GM’s ten. The Larks won at the line, 14 of 22 (64%) to 6 of 9 (67%). FC (4-5, 12-7) is on an eight-game win streak.
Nolt’s 1,000th Comes in Upset Win Over Lanesboro
Lanesboro entered the contest one game short of .500 (5-3, 8-9). LeRoy-Ostrander entered with just one win (1-7, 1-14). Record did not matter in an upset win. Jenna Olson hit four threes to help L-O to a 29-25 lead at the half. Lanesboro trailed 40-28 in the second half but came back to lead a couple times late, the last 50-48. But the Cards scored 12 of the game’s final 17 points. Junior forward Benita Nolt scored nine points down the stretch, including her 1,000th. She assisted two key Mabel Johnson makes. The later made it 57-53. It was then never a one-possession contest. L-O prevailed 60-55. The Cards were 9 of 16 from three (56%). Lanesboro was 7 of 28 (25%). L-O also won at the free throw line; 11 of 21 (52%) to 6 of 15 (40%). Nolt (28 pts, 3-5 threes, 9-16 FTs, 10 rebs, 6 asts) scored a season-high, notching her eleventh double-double. J-Olson (15 pts, 5-7 threes, 5 stls) keyed the deep shooting. Miranda Nagel chipped in 8 (pts) and 12 (rebs). Lanesboro was led by Jensyn Storhoff (18 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts, 8 stls). Ellie Howard (15 pts, 5-16 threes), and Taylor Hanson (11 pts, 12 rebs) helped.
Kiehne Sets FC Boys’ Scoring Mark in Easy Win
The verdict of the game probably was never in question as solid TRC squad Fillmore Central (3-6, 9-7) took on Grand Meadow (0-11, 0-16). Senior Jayce Kiehne scored a game-high 21 points (4-7 threes, 5-6 FTs, 5 rebs), leading the Falcons to a 69-34 win. In the process, the three-year starter became the Falcons’ all-time leading boy’s scorer, topping Jordan Jarland (1,252). Luke Hellickson (17 pts, 4-8 threes, 6 rebs, 4 stls) and Greg Kennedy (13 pts, 6 rebs) also helped the cause. Tyler Reid had 9 points (3-8 threes) to lead GM. FC hit 16 of 19 free throws (84%). It was the Falcons’ (3-6, 10-7) fourth straight win. GM is 0-12, 0-17.
