Gophers Run Win Streak to Seven, Fall to Panthers

Chatfield baseball started the year 1-8. In an excellent turnaround, Brian Baum’s Gophers have rallied with a big win streak. Chatfield topped FC/L 3-2. The Gophers led 3-1 after five. FC/L scored one in the sixth and had runners on second and third but Westin Nolte came in and got two strikeouts. He set down the final five (in order) for a 3-2 win. Kaisen Johnson (2-3, RBI) and Brody Whalen (2-3, 2 RBI) drove in the Gopher runs. Ethan Eickhoff (2-3) doubled and scored. Chase Johnston (5 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, Win) and Nolte (1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, Save) handled mound-duties. Bridon Bahl (1-2, 2 RBI), Levi Rogers (2-3), and Joey Pederson (6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, Loss) led the Falcons. Chatfield then took two from D-E. Up 3-1 in game one, they scored three in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-1 win. Thane Schild (2-3) drove in three. Cole Ramaker (7 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, Win) pitched a three-hitter. Johnson (2-2, R) and Sean Kirchner (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R) also did key work. Game two was a 14-0 win in five innings. Gopher pitcher Andrew Eickhoff (5 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, Win) allowed just one hit. Schild (1-1, 2B, R) drove in three more. Jackson Bernard (2-3, 2 RBI), Johnson (1-3, RBI, R), Nolte (0-1, RBI, 3 R), Ramaker (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R) and Ben Carrier (2-2, 2B, RBI, 2 R) also produced. It was Chatfield’s seventh straight win. The streak ended with an 8-4 loss at Pine Island. The Panthers (11-2) scored three each in the fourth and fifth to pull away. Schild (2-3) drove in three a third straight game. Ramaker (2-4, R) also had two hits. Kirchner (5 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) took the loss.  Chatfield (8-5, 8-9) is just a half game behind St. Charles (8-4, 12-5) atop the TRC-West.

Warriors Post 4-1 Week, Get to 10 Wins

Shawn Bauer’s Caledonia baseball guys marched along amidst a solid season with a 4-1 week.  The Warriors first took two from Cotter/Hope Lutheran, 11-0 and 9-0 (in six innings). Garrett Konz (7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, Win, 2-3, 2B, RBI) struck out 11 in the first game while Will Allen was 4-for-4 (3 RBI, 2 R). Reid Klug (3-4, 2 RBI, R), Jack Schmitz (1-5, 2B, RBI, R), Landon O’Heron (1-3, 2 RBI, R), and Caden Hauser (1-1, 2B, 2 R) also did work. Caledonia broke a 0-0 game with a seven-run fifth. In game two, Schmitz (2-2) drove in five runs and Klug (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K, 2-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) got the win. Konz (2-4, two 2B, RBI, 2 R), Ben Stemper (3-4, 2B, 2 R), and Tanner Ginther (1-4, 2B, RBI, R) helped. The Warriors then beat Dover-Eyota 10-3. Klug (2-4, 3 RBI), Mason King (2-2, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), O’Heron (2-4, 2B, RBI, R, 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K), Tan. Ginther (2-3, R), Tyson Ginther (1-2, 2B, RBI, R), Schmitz (1-3, RBI, R, 4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, Win), Konz (2-3, RBI, R), and Stemper (1-4, 2B, R) all contributed.  FC/L was then taken down 8-2. O’Heron had four first inning walks, allowing both FC/L runs, but he then set down 13 in a row. Konz (3-4, two 2B, RBI, R), O’Heron (1-3, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 6 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 7 K, Win), Allen (1-2, 2 RBI, R), and Schmitz (1-3, 2 R) did work. FC/L was led by Bridon Bahl (1-2, RBI) and Joey Pederson (1-3, R). It was Caledonia’s 10th win, and eighth in nine tries. The Warriors then fell at Randolph, 4-3. Allen (1-3) had a two-run triple in the seventh to make it a one-run game, but he was stranded at third.  Klug (1-3) had the other RBI. Konz (5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 11 K) took the loss. The Warriors (9-3, 10-5) trail LC/H (12-1, 15-2) in the TRC-East.

Three Rivers Conference Baseball (5/5 – 5/8)

La Crescent/Hokah 12, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro 2 [5] (FCL: Owen Schoepski 2-2)

Rushford-Peterson 5, PEM 15 [5] (RP: C. Lea 2-3, 2 RBI; Carson Johnson 2-3, 3B, 2 R; Grant DeGeorge 2-2, R)

La Crescent/Hokah 17, Rushford-Peterson 13 (RP: C. Lea 2-5, 2B, 4 RBI; Zach Baker 3-5, 2B, RBI, R; Connor Vaughn 3-4, RBI, 3 R; O. Lange 3-3; Caden Johnson 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 R; Jonah Bunke 1-4, 2 RBI, R. The teams used nine pitchers.  R-P had the bases loaded down 17-13 in the bottom of the seventh with zero out but did not score. They scored and gave up a season-high)

Southeast Conference Baseball (5/6 – 5/9)

Houston ended a seven-game losing streak after a 4-0 start)

Spring Grove 6, Southland 9 (SG: Jacob Solum/Gabe Klug 1-4, 2B; Ben Udstuen 2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, Loss. Rebels outhit the Lions 8-5, but SG had both extra-base hits. The Lions did not have an RBI)

Southland 12, GMLOK 8 (GMLOK: Blake Oeltjen 3-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R; Carter Strobel 1-3, RBI, R; Ira Schmidt 1-4, 2 RBI, R; T. Stevens 1-2, 2B, 3 BB, R; Sam Howard 1-4, 2B, R. Southland built a 12-3 lead with GMLOK scoring five in its last at bat)

Spring Grove 5, Mabel-Canton 6 (MC: Nolan Garness 2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, 6 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, Win; Milton Hutchinson 2-3, RBI; K. The Cougars led 1-0, then the Lions led 5-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth before M-C scored the final five runs.  Eiken had a two-run single. A Hutchinson RBI-single tied the game. A Josh Whitney RBI-ground-out was the game-winner. M-C swept the season series)
