Baseball: Last-Out Rally Highlights Lion Four-Win Week

Spring Grove was one out away from a 1-0 shutout loss. Due to pitch count, GMLOK’s two-time All-SEC Tyson Stevens (6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 12 K) could pitch to only one more batter, Jacob Solum, who delivered a double. Stevens left the mound, and the Bulldog bullpen could not hold the fort. After an extra eighth inning, SG won, 8-2. That was the third of four Lion wins. Grove scored late to prevail in three of the four. It began with an SEC sweep of visiting Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons, 3-1 and 12-6. Finally, after the late escape at GMLOK, the visiting Lions clipped Fillmore Central/Lanesboro, 5-3. In the twin bill opener versus AC/GE, the Lions scored one run early but needed two late, two-out runs to break a tie and win, 3-1. SG outhit the Knights, 8 to 4, led by Ben Udstuen (2-3, 3B), Solum (2-3, 2B) and Sam Klug (2-3). The winning pitcher was Brandon Jahnke (6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 10 K, 5 BB). Earning the save was Udstuen (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K). The outcome was in doubt until the final pitch. The Knights had the tying run at second base and go-ahead run at first. In the nightcap, the Lions jumped ahead 3-0 and later added six to lead 9-0 before winning, 12-6. Jahnke (3-3, 2B, 4 R) had the game’s only extra-base hit. Christian Bjerke (2-4) and Zach Brumm (1-3, 3 RBI) contributed as did Ezra Griffin and Gabe Klug, each with two RBIs. Pitching, Griffin (3 1/3 IP, 2 BB, 8 K) allowed no hits, no runs. The win was credited to reliever Gabe Klug (1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). At GMLOK, Solum (2-4) had that last-ditch double and scored on wild pitches to tie it 1-1. Then in the extra inning, SG scored seven runs with only one hit, an Ezra Konkel double, to win, 8-2. All five GMLOK hits came from different batters, including Stevens (1-4, 2B). Finally at FC/L, Grove benefitted from seven errors. It was scoreless until both teams plated three runs in the fifth inning. SG won with two runs in the top of the seventh. SG outhit FC/L, 8 to 6, sparked by Griffin (2-3, 2B, RBI) and Udstuen (2-4, RBI). Leading FC/L were Joey Pederson (2-4) and Levi Rogers (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI). Before being injured, Griffin pitched well (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K). Reliever Kolton Nerstad got the win (3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Pitching for FC/L were Pederson (6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) and Rogers (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K).  SG improved to 5-2 in the SEC, 8-4 overall. FC/L fell to 5-5, 7-6.
