May 22, 2023 by Paul Trende Leave a Comment

Caledonia’s Ayden Goetzinger slides into third with a stolen base while Fillmore Central/Lanesboro’s Peyton Olson tries to grab the throw from home. In a key TRC-East doubleheader, the Falcons and Warriors split the deuce, FC/L winning 6-4, Warriors winning 7-4. The East race is the Falcons (9-2, 12-2), La Crescent/Hokah (9-2, 11-4) and Caledonia (9-4, 11-5).

The week of Monday May 8 was highlighted by three TRC baseball games between teams with 10 wins. All chased division titles. Caledonia (7-3, 9-4) took on Chatfield (7-3, 11-3). Senior Ayden Goetzinger tossed a complete-game three-hit shut-out (1 BB, 4 K) in leading the Warriors to its second nice win (La Crescent/Hokah) in a row, 8-0. It was the first time the Gophers have been blanked this year. It was Caledonia’s fifth shut-out. Goetzinger (2-3, 2B, R), Garrett Konz (2-2, 2 RBI, 2 R), Kyle Bechtel (1-2, two SB, RBI, 2 R), Hunter Goetzinger (2-3, 2 RBI), and Tucker Ginther (1-3, 2B, RBI, R) hit the ball. Luke Carrier (2-3, 2B) led the Gophers. It was the Warriors’ tenth win (8-3, 10-4). Chatfield (7-4, 11-4) lost its third straight and fourth overall to a double-digit win team. The Warriors (8-3, 10-4) then trekked to Preston for a big TRC-East doubleheader with #4 in Class A FC/L (8-1, 11-1). Game one was about unearned runs. Eight of the 10 runs came off miscues. The biggest came in FC/L’s sixth.  Up 4-3, Caledonia got out number three on a strikeout. But a passed ball throw to first flew into right field, allowing the tying run to score from third. Two batters later, Peyton Olson delivered a bases loaded 2-run single, putting the Falcons up 6-4, which stood as the final. Olson (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI), Stephan Schultz (1-2, RBI, R), Corson (1-3, 2 R), and Gunner Benson (1-4, R, RBI) did work for FC/L. Levi Rogers (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K) picked up the win in relief of Cooper Ferrie (5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Caledonia was led by A-Goetzinger (3-4, two 2B, 2 RBI), who made a bid at tying the game in the seventh, but his deep blast was caught in left field. Owen Denstad (2-3, R) and G-Konz (1-4, RBI, R) helped. Reid Klug (5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) started but took a no decision. Game two saw FC/L jump out 5-0 only for the Warriors to answer with a seven-run second inning, capped by Ben Stemper’s three-run double. The 7-4 lead held as the final in five innings (darkness). The loss ended FC/L’s six-game win streak. Stemper (1-2, 2B, 3 RBI), G-Konz (2-3, 2 RBI, R), Bechtel (1-3, RBI, R), Payton Konz (1-2, R), and Drew Yahnke (1-2, RBI) did work offensively. Yahnke (3 2/3 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) collected the win while Stemper (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB) got the save. FC/L was led by Benson (2-3, R), Corson (1-3, RBI, R), Ty Sexton (2-3), Schultz (1-2, RBI), Rogers (1-2, RBI), and Ferrie (1-2, R). Dillon O’Connor (2 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K) got a no decision in relief of Benson (1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, Loss). FC/L (9-2, 12-2) and La Crescent/Hokah (9-2, 11-4) share the lead in the TRC-East (ahead of a big doubleheader) with Caledonia (9-4, 11-5) in third.  The Warriors are expecting star pitcher, Tristan Augedahl, who has not pitched since April 21 (shoulder), to be back for the end of the season.
