A Goodly Heritage – Do Not Forget

April 21, 2025 by Wenda Grabau

Fillmore County Journal- A Goodly Heritage

I had a pile of old calendars in my office. They stretched over several decades. I just could not destroy them since they documented so many little details I preferred to not forget. Some have great photos from which I might get some use. But the dates and the events we have participated in bring back special memories.

So in an effort to “spring clean” the office, I decided to type out the memories and save them in a neater, tidier fashion. As I read each item I marveled at how busy life once was.  Things like potty training, cutting teeth and losing them were big news for us and our little ones once upon a time.

Both my husband and I served on boards of various organizations. We spent time at our kids’ schools. Our children did and said some fun things that I had even forgotten I had written down.

When life gets busy, we tend to think that we will never forget what happened, but time and years do have a way of obscuring many details. The day to day business we face can sometimes rob us of things that are of prime importance. Circumstances like to dominate our thoughts and attention.

But what is really important in all phases of life?  Your relationship with God matters. With Him come truth, justice, love, and faithfulness. Our families matter. Other people matter.

What better place to find the instruction we need for all of those important parts of life than in God’s Word, the Holy Bible? Time likes to fool us into thinking there will always be more of it.

Has it convinced you that you can delay learning about God and the Bible till some other day? Someday there will be no tomorrow. Don’t let the pull of circumstances cheat you out of knowing God and His Truth. You and your family need Him.

Psalm 39:4, 5 (RSV) “LORD, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is! Behold, thou hast made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in thy sight. Surely every man stands as a mere breath!”

Precious memories can come from many parts of life and the people we encounter just as my calendars demonstrated. Yet they are easy to forget if we have no way to remind ourselves of them.  Some of my memories were written down. Many have fallen victim to being lost over time.

Important truths have been written in God’s Word. There is much of which to be reminded coming from the heart of God. We will forget those if we allow ourselves to put off reading and studying the Bible. Don’t forget what God has done for you. Spend time alone with Him each day.

Rhubarb Crisp

4 cups rhubarb, sliced in ½ inch slices
⅔ – ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup flour
½ cup oatmeal
¾ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
⅓ cup soft butter

Put rhubarb in greased 8×8-inch pan.  Blend the rest of the ingredients till crumbly.  Spread over rhubarb.  Bake 30 -35 minutes or till rhubarb is tender and the top is golden brown.  Serve warm with cream or ice cream or hard sauce.  Makes 6 servings.
