Nestled in the heart of southeastern Minnesota, Three Arrows Hunting Preserve is more than just a hunting destination; it’s a family legacy. Owned and operated by Ben and Diane Jacobsen, the preserve embodies a deep-rooted passion for upland bird hunting and Brittany Spaniels.
Ben’s lifelong love for Brittany Spaniels began over 40 years ago when he got his first litter. This passion eventually led to the creation of Three Arrows Hunting Preserve in 2011. Before that, in 1993, the couple had already taken significant steps by acquiring their first official breeding dogs.
The preserve offers a premier upland bird hunting experience, boasting well-maintained fields, dense cover, and abundant populations of pheasants, quail, and chukars. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter seeking a challenging hunt or a novice looking for a guided introduction to the sport, Three Arrows has something for everyone.
Experienced guides tailor hunts to individual preferences, ensuring a memorable experience for hunters of all skill levels. From navigating challenging terrain to mastering bird dog handling techniques, guides provide expert advice and support. For those who prefer a more independent approach, self-guided hunts offer the freedom to explore the preserve’s well-marked trails and strategically placed blinds. With abundant bird populations and picturesque landscapes, self-guided hunting provides a truly immersive outdoor experience.
As far as the hunting season goes, Ben said, “Because we’re a licensed hunting preserve, we can hunt a longer season here. We started at the beginning of September, and we’ll go into February or March.”
Three Arrows offers comprehensive gun-dog training programs, specializing in Brittany Spaniels. Experienced trainers work closely with both dogs and handlers to develop pointing, flushing, and retrieving skills. Whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or a first-time hunting-puppy parent, the training programs at Three Arrows can help you build a strong bond with your canine hunting companion.
Three Arrows is dedicated to preserving the natural habitat and promoting responsible hunting practices. By carefully managing their 160 acres of native grasses, they ensure a sustainable environment for wildlife. The preserve attracts a diverse range of hunters, from local enthusiasts to visitors from across the country. From doctors at the Mayo Clinic to families seeking quality outdoor experiences, Three Arrows welcomes all who share a passion for the sport.
In addition to hunting and dog training, Three Arrows is expanding its offerings to include boarding services for dogs. This new venture allows hunters to board their beloved companions in a place that understands the needs of hunting dogs. They are currently planning to construct additional kennels, both indoor and outdoor, to better accommodate their growing number of dogs. “Our facilities are really geared for the gun-dogs,” Ben explained.
Maintaining the preserve requires significant effort. Ben spends countless hours mowing walking paths, controlling weeds, and planting food plots. “A lot of effort goes into keeping the ground nice, even if it’s just native grasses,” he noted.
Additionally, they offer private lessons for individuals seeking personalized training and guidance. “I love the dogs, that’s what got me started,” Ben said. “Across the hunting world, the people, the dogs, they’re such genuine people that we typically deal with.”
“We do private lessons if someone needs help training their dogs,” Ben says. “We charge $75 per hour to teach someone to hunt. Private lessons for dog training are $75 per hour, or $250 per week.”
Ben’s connection to the land runs deep. “This is a third-generation farm. My dad was born in this house. People joke around, ‘How far away did you move from where you grew up?’ Well, I moved from the upstairs to the downstairs,” he quipped. Ben says one of his sons helps with the dog training, and the other son is in his last year of college. That son plans to move back to the area to help with the preserve.
Three Arrows hosts various events throughout the year, including corporate hunts and veteran hunts. “This year we had 64 people for the veterans hunts. This was the fifth or sixth annual hunting event for Veterans Forever,” Ben shared.
Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or a newcomer to the sport, Three Arrows Hunting Preserve offers an unforgettable upland bird hunting experience. With its commitment to conservation, expert guidance, and warm hospitality, Three Arrows is a true gem in the heart of southeastern Minnesota.
