As autumn settles in, the Root River towns of Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Lanesboro warmly invite you to experience the breathtaking beauty of the season at the annual Root River Valley Autumn trail celebration.
Explore the stunning landscapes by walking or biking the Root River Trail or enjoy a leisurely drive through the picturesque valley. Each town is bursting with free activities, thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of local residents and businesses.
Whalan is celebrating the season with its Fall Finale, offering an afternoon of live music, yard games, and delicious food. Enjoy performances by local favorites Tom and Barb Schram of Rustic Moon, Ryan Palmer and Jeff Sanders of River Crossing, and singer songwriter Jordan Persson from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whalan Gazebo. Food and drink will be available to purchase. Don’t forget to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
In Peterson, join the dedication of the John T. Erickson Veteran Memorial Garden at 1 p.m. The program features music by Maynard Thompson and Friends, along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. There will be cake and ice cream, coffee and lemonade and water. Enjoy a $1 hot dog or brat wrapped in a bun or a lomper, a soft potato flatbread the size of a dessert plate made with potatoes, flour, and a little salt like a Norwegian lefsa but smaller.
Rushford invites you to a cozy movie in the park, weather permitting, at 7 p.m. The Lions Club are providing popcorn, with freewill donations accepted.
Lastly, Lanesboro will host its family-friendly Fall in Lanesboro event, featuring an array of free activities like the Lanesboro Quest scavenger hunt, horse-drawn wagon rides, and mini pumpkin painting. Enjoy traditional Norwegian music of Janette Dragvold at Parkway Place, where kids can also try playing Norwegian instruments. Local businesses will feature live music and a variety of sales and specials throughout the day.
